The 49ers already have Anquan Boldin, and after missing out on a chance to grab the Ravens’ No. 3 receiver during Super Bowl XLVII (Jacoby Jones, who signed with the Chargers … and what I said is slightly misleading, because there weren’t any reports that the 49ers had interest), it looks like they’re hot on the trail of Baltimore’s No. 2 wideout from that title team.
Sources indicate strong mutual interest between Torrey Smith and 49ers; nothing finalized one source called them frontrunner among suitors

Torrey Smith, who recently turned 26, is known as a deep threat. He has 30 receiving touchdowns in four seasons, including 11 last year. That made up for the fact that he posted the lowest yardage total (767) of his career in 2014. He has one 1,000-yard season (1,128 yards in 2013) and 414 yards and four touchdowns in eight playoff games.
On the down side, Smith was second among receivers in drops last season with 11, on just 89 targets.
Regardless, this signing makes almost too much sense for the 49ers, since they can no longer count on Vernon Davis as their go-to field-stretcher. Also, the previously mentioned ties to Baltimore.
Hey, Ray Rice is also available! With Frank Gore probably heading elsewhere …
(Kidding! Relax, 49ers homers and York apologists, I was just joking. Put the pitchforks down.)
