According to Jay Glazer, the 49ers and Chiefs have agreed to a deal sending Alex Smith to Kansas City.
Tim Kawakami is reporting that the 49ers will receive the Chiefs’ second round pick in 2013 as well as a similar pick in 2014. Although the deal can’t be finalized until the league year begins on March 12th, this essentially guarantees the 49ers a hefty haul for Smith. Presumably, San Francisco now owns the 31st and 34th overall picks, allowing them to draft not only for need, but talent as well.
People have wondered for weeks what Smith is worth, and talks started heating up after the quarterbacks performed at the Combine over the weekend. Jason LaCanfora was the first to tweet about the 49ers having a deal in place for Smith, and with the Jaguars and Browns dropping out of the conversation, the Chiefs became the likeliest destination.
There was some speculation about the Arizona Cardinals getting in the mix, but LaCanfora shot down the rumors this morning, saying the Cardinals’ “offer was weak.” I was actually finishing up a post on the possibility of a trade within the division when the news broke. It was beautifully written too, but none of you will ever get to see it.
If everything that’s being reported is true, this is about as good as it gets for the 49ers. Details will emerge in the future about exactly what the 2014 pick is, but if the 49ers are indeed getting a 2013 second rounder in return for Smith, they now own 15 picks in this year’s draft. Now all of our speculative energies will turn toward possible trades (Percy Harvin? Darrelle Revis?).
This “potential” trade looks to be a good one for the former No. 1 overall pick, as well. Kansas City has reportedly made a “real commitment” to Smith, presumably meaning his tenure with the Chiefs will be a long-term one rather than a one- or two-year stopgap before handing the reins to the quarterback of the future.
One thing is certain: Kansas City’s fetish for San Francisco’s quarterbacks continues, and the 49ers’ possibilities for the future just got significantly better.

[...] within the division, the news broke, rendering it useless. At least he got one post out of it. | 49ers will trade Alex Smith to Chiefs for two draft picks [...]
Definitely more than what I expected San Francisco to pull in for Smith. More draft picks are never a bad thing, and the higher the better.
Save some pizza for me! See my post, 2-25-13 below ------------------------------------------------------------------------ paperback writer February 25, 2013 at 4:22 pm - Reply Scenario #2 PLUS+ They will also get a mid-rounder this or next year -
Wow, what a trade for the 49ers! I agree with the sentiment that this trade works for both teams. The 49ers get more picks and they could trade some of these picks for a guy like Revis perhaps, and Alex Smith gets to go to a place where he will be the starting QB. It really was time for both sides to move on. Honestly, both sides really should've moved on a long time ago, even though I appreciate that Alex Smith got the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game back in the 2011 season. It will be interesting to see what Alex Smith does in Kansas City, and what backup QB the 49ers will bring in for Kaepernick. But yes, it's still hard to believe and shocking that Alex Smith actually got traded.
Everyone who downvoted my post saying it would be at least a 2nd should be ashamed of themselves! Great freakin trade! This is going to be one helluva draft!
Wow. I was expecting 1 fourth round pick. This is quite the haul for Smith. The 49ers now have to reduce the number of draft pics. Way too many for a single draft. Would love for the 49ers to trade away two lowround draft pics this year for a single higher pick next year.
Sweet deal! I never thought a 2nd this year was in the cards. Nice work again for Harbaugh, who brought Smith back from the graveyard of former #1 picks, and made him worth this deal. Kudos to Smith too for being a consummate professional. Now who will be the backup? Not sold on the current group.
Wonder what the plan is.. To trade up in the draft or trade the picks for a veteran that can help today.
WHAT A TRADE!
