I’m over a week late with the ratings, which upset a lot of you. Some of the nasty emails and tweets I received … do you kiss your mothers with those mouths? My word.
Just kidding, no one mentioned it. A few days ago I checked out the website where the ratings numbers are available and noticed that SF’s results for February were posted on the 17th. And I was so moved by this discovery that I didn’t post anything on the subject for three days. Way to sell my own (copied and pasted) content, eh?

Radio ramblings
— 95.7 The Game and the Oakland A’s announced an extension of their partnership. It’s a four-year deal, which makes KGMZ the Athletics’ flagship station through 2018.
— Was this a surprise? Not really. The A’s haven’t always been happy with 95.7, in part because they talk about the Giants a lot more than KNBR talks about the A’s. But the A’s need a consistent place for fans to tune in, and The Game talks sports. That makes it a better fit for a baseball team than, say, a country station. When 95.7 was front and center at A’s FanFest, it seemed fairly obvious that the two sides would reach a deal (if they hadn’t already agreed to one, at least in principle).
— This isn’t just an important occurrence for A’s fans, either. Entercom could keep the A’s on 95.7 even if they changed formats, but what sense would that make? They’ve already put a lot of work into building an FM sports station in the Bay Area. So, while many have wondered how long “The Game” would stick around, the answer is probably “at least four more years.” Over which time they’ll probably have about 12 different morning shows, at the station’s current rate.

— I’ve had a few people ask (and no, I’m not joking this time) if I was planning on writing a revised list ranking all of these sports talk radio shows. The last time I did anything of the sort was when I ranked the KNBR shows four years ago, back when I was internet pals with Damon Bruce and Ralph Barbieri was still on the station. I probably pissed off a few people with that list, but my opinions have changed greatly in the time since. (Not just my feelings about Bruce, either — I feel quite differently about each of the shows on KNBR, and then I also check out The Game’s content fairly regularly.)
I was working full-time in a cubicle back then, and really had no idea what it took to put on a radio show. Not that I’m an expert now, but it’s easier to criticize when you’re just listening and not putting my thought into the preparation and behind-the-scenes work it takes to produce these radio programs.
Also (sellout alert), some of these shows invite me on as a guest. Well, a few. Actually, it’s Ted Ramey every Wednesday and occasionally I get invited to do SportsPhone 680, and that’s about it. Still no appearances on 95.7 (I’m pretty sure the ban is still in place). However, it seems like a conflict of interest to rank shows I’ve either appeared on or may appear on someday. But here’s some good news for you list-lovers: LOL KNBR is working on the second edition of his KNBR host power rankings, which should be done at some point before the A’s extension with 95.7 expires.
