95.7 The Game promotes Dan Dibley to morning show

Dan Dibley

I received a press release from the local FM sports talk station that made me smile this morning. Dan Dibley will be a permanent addition to the morning show, where he’ll join Joe Fortenbaugh and Lorenzo Neal.

I’m probably a little biased, since I consider Dibley a friend and he was one of our best BASGcast guests (yes, we’re working on getting our podcast up and running — hopefully that’ll happen soon). But he’s also a guy who’s worked hard for years and deserved a break as much as anyone in the cutthroat radio industry.

Most of the readers probably remember when Dibley was on KNBR (most notably as the update anchor who also served as a comic foil for Gary Radnich). Then he jumped ship to 95.7 at the very beginning of that station’s transition to sports talk. He had a significant role in the Rise Guys morning show, among other duties. Then the Rise Guys was canceled in March of 2014 when they hired Damon Bruce, and Dibley was out of the sports talk business for a bit (other than some appearances on CSN).

I was on Sports Talk Live with him a couple of times, and I remember Dibley telling me about several jobs he had, as he reported traffic from a helicopter for KCBS and even drove for Uber. He also took home $4,000 on Wheel of Fortune in 2014.

Eventually he worked his way back on 95.7, and I thought there was a chance he might become Greg Papa’s permanent co-host … until today’s announcement. Dibley replaces Chad Doing, who left the station along with John Middlekauff and Guy Haberman as 95.7 made room for J.T. The Brick.

This is Great news!!! Dibbley is a throw back to the old KNBR when Radnich actually worked and talked sports, tried to make a name for himself on 957 when it 1st became a sports station. Was wrongly let go. Now he can truly shine with 2 guys that can't talk sports. This morning show just got a whole lot better.

Ahh, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Good to have Dibley back in the morning as an alternative to KNBR. As much as I would have liked the Papa pairing to work out, I think he is better suited to this role.  Lets his full personality shine through. And he's a Bay Area guy, which is a plus.

Happy for Dibley- He helped spearhead the whole damn station? Don't know what politics occurred that made him have to leave with the Rise Guys? but I was PISSSED!   Glad he's back in the morning slot!

In particular I happen to love neurotic Joe and Mellow Lo in the morning! I think Dibbs will be a beautiful addition for this trilation sensation!

Lund on the other hand... destroyed two shows with one move!? He's taken on a very kiss-ass personae with Tolbert? Hard to listen to with Lunds' excessive nervous laughter? The show IQ was a lot higher with Ratto's savvy miserables character! Tolbert is better off alone I think.

And of course....Papa will make a show happen with anyone as cohost! Greg is the best!

The Dibbler deserves some kind of stick-to-it award - lots of ups and down to his career, and I really admire that he keeps getting up off the mat.  Haberkauf could probably use a pep talk from him about now.

The Afternoon Delight was great because Papa and Lund's personalities conflicted and it was entertaining.  With Townsend, it's boring and mediocre at best.  I think some of these guys forget that they are in the business of entertainment and their egos due them no good. Yes, you may be very sports smart but you are boring and a squeaky voice doesn't help either.

@JJ Bird i would make the same case for Lund and Tolbert....they are quite mediocre together.  Tolbert had much better chemistry with Ratto.

@JJ Bird Yeah, the Afternoon Delight with Lund and Papa was a pretty good show.  Still hard to believe Lund left what was a good thing for more money. Yes, KNBR probably paid him much more than 95.7 probably did, but the chemistry between him and Tolbert just isn't there yet.

I will say this though, maybe in the future,  probably when Gary retires or something, KNBR could paid Lund with Krueger though. They have a good back and forth in 49ers postgame. Either way, Lund won't have on KNBR what he had with Papa on 95.7/

As far as Townsend goes, as has been said here in the past, Townsend is probably better solo.

Wow, I was so pumped to hear Dibbs on the 95.7 Morning show!!!  He is, simply put, the best.  He has the George Washington spot on my Mount Rushmore of sports talk announcers.  I loved the Rise Guys and Dibbs was the man.  Lately I have been so sick of Fortenbaugh and Neal that I have gone over to 680am.  So, Chad seemed like a good guy but he didn't offer anything.  I have thought at times that Fortenbaugh and Neal were going to come to blows and I was pulling for Lorenzo to pound Joe's head in.  I really get sick of Fortenbaugh's know-it-all attitude.  Neal seems like a thoughtful and reasonable guy.

I really hope Dan Dibley makes the morning formula work again!  He is the best.  I think he can have fun with Lorenzo but I'm worried about him crashing straight into Fortenbaugh.  In the event of that crash, I really want Dibley to walk away the winner!

@gc4895 Yeah, Fortenbaugh sounds like he can be a pain to deal with at times, or be kind of a load. The other day Dibley mentioned some stats, and Fortenbaugh got on him for mentioning stats and Fortenbaugh said that he's the stats guy. He might've been joking, but Fortenbaugh sounded serious. It kind of made Fortenbaugh look insecure.

I have no problems with Lorenzo Neal. Yeah, his knowledge might be limited in baseball and basketball since he is more of a football guy, but he can provide passable insight on the ins and outs of every sport because he did it at the highest level and played in the NFL.

Yeah, sometimes Lorenezo Neal and Fortenbaugh have spirited arguments, especially when it comes to racial stuff. I wonder if Lorenzo Neal could bust Fortenbaugh's head in in real life. Probably so, but you can tell he probably has to hold back at times on the show.

Chad Doing wasn't really that bad. Yeah, he didn't really offer anything, but he was a good "point man". He could lead the show and stay on topic. If feels like Fortenbaugh doesn't do that as much and doesn't seem used to being a "point man". I think I agree with others that 95.7 let go of the wrong guy. They probably should've let Fortenbaugh go and kept Chad. They probably kept Fortenbaugh because he's a stats guy and he also talks about the gambling lines.

Good for Dibley.  The Rise Guys weren't mandatory listening for me, but morning radio around here is such a wasteland, pretty much no show is.  Still, having somewhere to go when Paulie is dorking out with his soundboard, or Radnich is babbling, or even just somewhere to jump on when KNBR is in yet another boring stretch of too many commercials, was pretty OK.

Hopefully we get something like that again.

Dibley is a funny, talented, and seemingly authentic guy, but it's gonna take a lot of work making Fortenbaugh palatable. They fired the wrong guy, when they dismissed Chad.

Dibs is the man! I started listening to The Game when it first started and The Rise Guys was my favorite program to listen to because Creds and Dibs had great rapport.

I like Dibs. He's always been a guy I've enjoyed listening to, and he seems like a positive, hard working guy.

Will be interesting to see how this works.  Dibs was fantastic with the Rise Guys and served as a great complement to Kriedler on so many segments.     Lorenzo Neal and Joe Fortenbaugh are clearly not in the same class as Kriedler..........and I don't see that sort of program.   However I do think Dibs could have a  role similar to when he was with murph and mac.

Congratulations to Dibley!..... Even though I thought he was good co-hosting with Papa, he really did carve his niche in the mornings going back to his KNBR days doing updates for Murph and Mac and for Gary, and then of course The Rise Guys.

It will be interesting to see how he does with Lorenzo Neal and Joe Fortenbaugh. Dibley will add a lot to this show, maybe more than Chad did.

But yes, congratulations again to Dibley!

Don't listen much in morning so fine by me. They need a third person definitely and he fits better in morning zoo type environment than pestering Papa into canned bits. Townsend should be Papa's permanent co host. Not a fan of Dibs' style but appreciate the sticktoitness of his craft after setbacks and glad he found a home.

Hurray! should never had let him go.

I thought he made more sense as Papa's co-host. Seems like having three in the morning and an update anchor is kind of excessive.
