From my understanding Comcast is looking to add both San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics insiders this season, so my assumption is Baggarly will continue covering the Giants exclusively.
Urban was the “MLB Insider” during his tenure at CSN Bay Area, although his coverage focused more on the Giants than the A’s.
The only surprise — at least to me — is that this wasn’t announced sooner, like around the beginning of January.
Baggs frequently did guest spots on the field for CSN Bay Area after Giants games, as do other beat writers who aren’t/weren’t employed by Comcast. He’s the preeminent beat writer covering the team, with the most popular blog (Extra Baggs, which we’ll probably see in some form on CSN) and largest Twitter following. He’s also a KNBR “insider,” as is Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Baggarly’s already been doing a great job for several years, and now he’s entrusted with enhancing CSN Bay Area’s credibility on baseball-related matters. They took a bit of a hit in that department last season, particularly when they said back in July that Pat Burrell had been released and Brandon Belt demoted, a report that was later retracted.
