Cal Athletic Director Sandy Barbour met with Jeff Tedford following the Bears’ brutal 62-14 loss to the Beavers in Corvallis. According to Jon Wilner (via Jeff Faraudo of the Bay Area News Group), the team scheduled a players only meeting Sunday evening, where it was widely speculated that the news of Tedford’s dismissal would be announced. The process was drawn out longer than expected, as Barbour and Tedford also had a lunch meeting yesterday, but now the speculation is over — multiple sources have reported that Tedford’s firing is now official. As expected, California’s disastrous 2012 season spelled the end of the coach’s 11-year career at the university.
The Bears committed 15 penalties in their loss to Oregon State and the contest was basically over when they hit the locker room at half time down by 28. The cards may have already been stacked against them without Zach Maynard or Keenan Allen playing, but the Bears were 3-7 even with both players healthy. Nevertheless, the team put up little fight and lost four turnovers in the coach’s swan song. When asked postgame whether he would be coaching California next year, Tedford responded, “I don’t know.” He does now.
As far as recruiting goes, Cal has done very little for next season. The only commits at this point are De La Salle linebacker Victor Egu, Cathedral wide receiver Torry McTyer, Marin Catholic quarterback Jared Goff and Centennial-Corona lineman Cameron Hunt. A change was certainly needed, as this was shaping up to be Cal’s worst recruiting effort in over a decade.
Where do they go from here?
The $6.9M buyout they’re paying to part ways with Tedford is a tough pill to swallow, because UC Berkeley already spent $321M on Memorial Stadium’s renovations and new facilities under the belief that it would ensure the program’s resurgence under Tedford’s watch. The Pac-12 is becoming a stronger football conference by the year, with high-profile coaching hires becoming the norm. Now the pressure is on for Barbour to match not only their Bay Area rivals in the South Bay, but other West Coast teams (UCLA, Washington, Oregon State) that are getting better as Cal slides into the abyss.
Barbour will need to be careful in her next football hire, because the financial wiggle room for buyouts is no longer there. Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News wrote this list of possible replacements last Friday, headlined by Boise State’s Chris Petersen, former Raiders head coach Hue Jackson, SJSU head coach Mike MacIntyre and 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Not to make the case for MacIntyre, but he does have NFL coaching experience and in fact coached under Bill Parcells. If you understood the recruiting job he has done at State you'd have no doubt he'd do very well recruiting at Cal.
Again,I agree exactly. Spell police are happy now!..
I'll throw my two cents here and guess that Ron Rivera is the next Cal coach. He has plenty of goodwill and history with UC. Many Cal fans have not forgotten his time in a blue and gold uniform. The real one. Not the piece of marketing junk you see currently. Just the thought of it makes me want to regurgitate my meal.
Cal,Like Stanford, seems to do best with an offensive minded coach-the USC's and others swallow up the big defensive guys. Ron would be ok,but being a linebacker..I dunno.
I would think Hue would be a great pick too. A flamboyant Berkeley coach who knows how to make team score points? sounds good. He thrived at Baltimore,he turned the Raiders around, Cal would be a great second chance for a proven dude.
Stan - this isn't a personal attack on you, and has nothing to do with politics or nail polish; but I think Hue Jackson is a big fat NOTHING. I hope Cal steers clear of this fraud
How soon they forget. Hue's play calling as a Raider coach was much better then any since the Gruden days. No,he made Campbell look good,he made Grad look good, and with Palmer,he nearly made the playoffs. As usual,McCoachkiller ended what could have been a great Raider year. Darren is the brother of another mother to Beidrens.
And the man has some great fingernail polish I hear...
Jeff? is there news about Jeff?. oh. Tell slam and rich.
I caught Raddy and Larry playing good cop-bad cop on the Stanford kicker for last years Bowl loss...Radnich took the kids side (good) Larry -that the kid was bad all last year (bad). But neither dared criticize Shaw.
Your obsession with with Radnich is creepy. Hope he doesn't find a rabbit in his spaghetti pot
Your one of those repubs on the splash under another name." Dysfunctional club" it should be called..hee.
Yours with me is creepy and idiotic. Rabbit? whaaa?
Slam...you idiot slut.
... and while you're using your Mommy's computer, look up how to spell "Exactley"
since you obviously don't get out much, google "rabbit in spaghetti pot" and maybe your tiny little brain will understand the reference ... and there might even be a picture of you there, Stanley
Even though this wasn't surprising, this is still kind of shocking. Tedford helped put Cal football back on the map, but they just fizzled out the past couple of seasons. As far as replacements for Tedford goes, Mike McIntyre would be a great hire, but I agree that it would be tough for San Jose State to come back from that. Plus he has a great thing going at San Jose State right now. Yes, he would still be here in the Bay Area, but he is building a good/great San Jose State program right now. Greg Roman could be a good hire, but I heard he might go elsewhere.... I actually think Hue Jackson wouldn't be that bad. If he can take the Raiders to 8-8, I'm sure he would be a good/decent hire at Cal, even though he probably wouldn't be an ideal hire though. It will be interesting to see who Sandy Barbour picks as the next Cal head football coach.
If your a kid ,and he comes'a recruit'in,how can you say no to him and Cal?
If I'm a stud high school player getting recruited and the former San Jose St coach is sitting in my living room, I'm probably not too impressed. Who does he know ? How can he get me an NFL job after 4 years ? Now ex-Bear Ron Rivera, who may get canned by the Carolina Panthers .... or Jack Del Rio ....NOW I'm interested
People might have once said that about a former University of San Diego head coach...
Slam thinks Del Rio and others losing records are going to fire up recruits? weird.
But before that he was a star college QB at Michigan, played QB in the NFL, was on Jon Gruden's staff in Oakland ...
Exactley.
As a life-long, die hard 49er fan...I'd rather Cal sign Greg Roman than Mike MacIntyre. The 49ers would have an easier time recovering from that than San Jose St would in my opinion.
With all that energy Mike exudes,Isn't it Harbaugh like?
You know what? I'm for proven winners over loser retreads. The percentage of success is higher, even with some who have little background...but if its a winning background-try him.
Jon Gruden? Bring back Muche? If they do it on the cheap - the duo of Ronnie Lott/Steve Young - 1/2 LOL Most Likely - Greg Roman
Hire the guy at SJ State..look what he did single handed. Like a newer Harbaugh.
its really not that impressive. Remember, this is a watered-down WAC. Remember when the Spartans would lose to Boise State, Fresno State, etc.??? All those teams jumped from the WAC and are not on the Spartans schedule......so the Spartans have a much easier schedule than in previous years.
If Sandy Barbour hires Hue Jackson, it will just prove what a gutless moron she is. Hue Jackson is NOTHING. He whispered sweet nothings in Al Davis' ear, miraculously won 8 games, then got kicked to the curb by Mark Davis. He is all bluster, all bark ... coaching DB's and Special Teams in the NFL's version of Siberia ; Cincinnati ! PLEASE don't hire this retread idiot pretender
"Gutless moron" So,name calling isn't appalling to you like you say? LOL.
I may be the only republican that thinks Stan is pretty funny...Even when he makes a valid point people dislike his comments...He may say some ridiculous things, but its still entertaining...Rebel Rouser...By the way, wasnt this article about Tedford?
Thanks..and ok,I might have worked with some good people who watched FOX news.
I guess his attitude along with his selling his home before the season were strong indicators. Funny but after I posted I thought they would give him another year considering his huge pay..well,with 300 mill sunk into an all new sports nirvana...I guess the 7 mill and maybe double that of a new coach isn't a huge expense after all. Like 60 minutes said...football is its own business in college sports.
So you admit that you WERE WRONG when you predicted Cal would give Tedford another year?
I'm not God? yes.
Slam-"The Nazis have spoken!"...he's thrilled. yawn. So,why is it ALL Nazi supporters are Republican, and none Dems? huh?..same for racists. No lib racists..see how it works?
THANKS RICH
Go write Raddy another love email. Even he thinks your nuts.
You're so blinded by your foolery, you have no idea that I was baptized in a black church, and likely will spew some BS about that now too. Hey Stan, not everyone that disagrees with you is a Nazi, not all Republicans are evil, and not all blacks are Democrats. Sorry to disrupt your binary view of things...
Be civil, gents
Now ,go polish your Nazi memorabilia..or polish something while thinking of NAZI's...hee.
To a Republican like you Rich, MLK was also called satan. I'm sure you knew that Nazi man you are.
not God, but definitely one of Satan's (more lower level, minor) minions...
It would be awesome to see Chris Petersen but I don't think that I would want to jump into such a big rebuilding job if I were in his shoes. I imagine there will be a few lean years ahead for Cal.
Peterson has said the only jobs he would leave Boise State for are Oregon and Cal. But I agree with Stats Guy - If I were him, I wouldn't leave Boise State for Cal at this point. My hope is that Cal goes in the direction of a promising, young coach that is maybe a coordinator somewhere or coaching at a lower-level program. What I don't want is another old, arrogant coach in the PAC-12 just because he's a big name (see: Mike Leach at WSU and the recent abuse allegations stemming form Marquess Wilson quitting the team).
Based on the rumors that Chip Kelly is headed to the NFL, Peterson will have his choice between the Ducks and Bears. In other words, Peterson will be headed to coach the Ducks. Cal is in a unique position because they have to find a coach that will a.) revitalize the program and b.) sell tickets. Because of that, I don't see a young unknown taking over for Tedford
I just read Petersen turned down $4 mill per from UCLA last year ; boy he would be a huge splash for the Cal program AND STOP FLOATING HUE JACKSON'S NAME OUT THERE. GEEZ. HE'S HORRIBLE
Hard to take any list prepared by Kawakami seriously. First of all, he's not a serious reporter, he regularly makes things up out of whole cloth. There is nothing in the linked column to think he has any basis for any of those names. Second, the criticism of the Longshore era Bears shows that TK doesn't even remember what he actually knew. Cal was just fine with Longshore at QB when he was healthy. He was a top level Pac-10 QB. Health was the only issue there. It was Reilly who really brought the team down.
