Before the game, Jim Harbaugh got all shoulder-slappy intense with Colin Kaepernick, who had trouble keeping a straight face.
After the San Francisco 49ers lost 16-13 in overtime to the St. Louis Rams, Harbaugh gave a vote of confidence of sorts to his second-year quarterback.
“I’ll let you know if there’s a change, but right now feel as if it’ll be the same as this week,” said Harbaugh, who earlier this week announced that Kaepernick would start in St. Louis because he had “the hot hand.”
Presumed stability at the quarterback position shouldn’t be a surprise, even though Kaepernick made two huge mistakes in a loss where the 49ers’ defense played more than well enough to win. How can Harbaugh back away from Kaepernick now, after he and Greg Roman were so clearly out-schemed?
After two games against the 49ers, Jeff Fisher definitely has the hot hand if we’re comparing coaches — and not just because he has a better placekicker at his disposal. Except for one wild play (a 50-yard run for Kaepernick in the fourth quarter), Fisher’s defense confused Kaepernick, pressuring him without letting him escape for big gains on the ground.
The 49ers’ offensive line has certainly played better, but it appeared as if the Rams knew what the 49ers were doing on nearly every play. Strangely, the 49ers were conservative and aggressive at the wrong times. If Delanie Walker catches that potential touchdown pass with a couple minutes to go, nobody says anything. Then again, Walker has dropped passes all season and running at that stage in the game would have drained the clock and forced the Rams to take timeouts. In overtime, the 49ers weren’t exactly content to let David Akers attempt a field goal from 50+. However, two vanilla Frank Gore runs, followed by a play where Kaepernick rolled to his left (and threw it away), didn’t help San Francisco’s cause.
The 49ers brought in two kickers for tryouts this week, so they know Akers isn’t dependable from long range. He hasn’t kicked a 40-yarder in a month and hasn’t made a field goal of 50 or more yards since Week 1. But the key isn’t finding a kicker who’s a lock to make a 51-yarder in overtime — the few kickers who can be counted on to do that are already employed (just check out Nate Kaeding’s postseason record if you wonder how he’d do under pressure). No, the coaches need to make sure that when they’re gifted with extraordinarily good field position in sudden death overtime, they put their team in a position to finish the game without having to count on Akers suddenly finding his stroke.
The 49ers were also flagged nine times for 82 yards, and penalties are generally considered a coaching problem as well. It’s going to be a long plane ride home for Harbaugh and his staff.
Calling out Kap
One could also find fault with the coaching staff for calling a read option play near their own goal-line, but that’s the reason why Kaepernick is now the starter — he allows the coaches to maintain an air of unpredictability. It’s up to Kaepernick not to cause turnovers, especially while holding an 8-point lead on that area of the field.
Kaepernick’s favorite quarterback as a youngster was Brett Favre, who threw a lot of shovel passes. The main difference was Favre almost always shoveled forward. Kaepernick flung the ball toward the goal-line with the type of recklessness that Alex Smith’s supporters have warned us about for the last few weeks. Some are blaming Ted Ginn for allowing Janoris Jenkins (who can’t cover the slant to save his life, but has now scored three touchdowns in the last two games) to pick up the ball, but Kaepernick shouldn’t have put him in that position. Ginn was probably in shock that Kaepernick tossed the ball like that, as we all were.
The safety was also caused by an egregious mental error occurring when Kaepernick was running with the ball. Mike Pereira thought it might not have been intentional grounding (the line of scrimmage extends out of bounds during those plays, and it appeared that Kaepernick’s pass went far enough) but what was Kaepernick doing in the end zone on a play that started at the 49ers’ 17-yard line?
On the subject of end zones, Kaepernick has led the 49ers to just three touchdowns in the last two games. He has shown flashes, but his play has never quite measured up to that fantastic first half against Chicago — 30 glorious, action-packed minutes that led to him becoming an NFL starter. In that half, Kaepernick stretched the field with his arm and Vernon Davis looked like a new man. Except for passes of 22 and 30 yards to Michael Crabtree, there were no passes of longer than 20 yards and very few shots taken downfield. When the running game is bottled up and the 49ers’ passing attack looks like San Francisco’s offense on Smith’s worst day, points are hard to come by on the road.
After averaging an insane 9.2 yards per attempt going into today’s game, the Rams held Kaepernick to a pedestrian 6.5 yards per attempt. In case you’re wondering, Miami (next week’s opponent) came into Week 12 allowing 7.1 yards per attempt to opposing quarterbacks … the same figure as the St. Louis Rams.
Missing Kendall Hunter
How bad must LaMichael James look in practice? After Hunter tore his achilles it seemed like James would finally get his shot after 10 straight times on the inactive list. Instead, it was A.J. Jenkins who was activated for the first time since Week 1 while James watched another game in street clothes. Gore carried the ball a season-high 23 times with minimal success (58 yards total; only 21 yards on the 17 carries after his first quarter TD) and Brandon Jacobs was even worse in his three rushing attempts, gaining only 5 yards (although he did convert one third down).
It looks like we’re on a collision course with Jenkins playing a role in games, as Mario Manningham left the game with a shoulder injury. If he misses time, Jenkins becomes the No. 4 WR behind Crabtree, Randy Moss and Ted Ginn.
What about Alex?
After Greg Zuerlein launched the 54-yard field goal to win the game as if his right leg was an actual cannon, Fox quickly showed the closeups you’d expect. Here’s how Kaepernick looked:
And it sure looked like Alex Smith had the “Yeah, playing QB in the NFL ain’t that easy, is it” smirk going…

Wow, are people overreacting. Kap played pretty well except for that botched toss. If Walker catches that perfect pass for a TD, all of you would have been singing his praises. Also, Kap did get rid of the ball and did not deserve that bad safety call. He made some mistakes, but he still played well. This game was about getting out-coached, which is rare for this coaching staff, but it does happen. It happened to Walsh, it happened to Belichick and it will happen again to Harbaugh. Stop expecting the team to be perfect all the time.
No, he did not play well . Infact, he has regressed since the Bears game . It has gotten worse but because lucky for Kaep, the 49ers have a good defensive unit so he is not under pressure to score many points. Btw, Kaep will not last long if he keeps running around out there. Teams will line him up and try to put him out of the game. Hot shot QB tend to draw attention or bounties.
Alex vs. Cap will be settled next year when the 49ers play the Cardinals. It will be strange to see him wearing a Diamondback hat.
...or A's hat, playing for the Black and Silver.
let's put an end to the ridiculous Alex Smith to the Raiders speculation right now. No QB worth his salt would go to Oakland next year, and the Raiders are still buried in salary cap hell and need draft picks and DEFENSIVE talent. And Carson Palmer is locked up next yr There are 3 or 4 teams right off the top of my head where Smith would go before he would even consider the Raiders.
The hand has cooled but the feet is still pretty hot ! so JH will go with him
Nice Game Defense
Offensive playcalling was the worst yet this year... try another 1 yard run up the middle for the 50th time call another crazy pitch on their goalline have rookie kap throw from the endzone under pressure again DUMB this one is ALL ON HARBAUGH ROMAN? let him walk, KEEP FANGIO Go Niners
I see the problem more as the play calling and game plan. It seemed like it was pretty much called for Alex Smith being the quarterback. You don't call a vanilla game plan and use your dynamic quarterback. You use your safe and dependable QB. It's like taking a Prosche on HWY 299 and keeping it at 50 MPH the whole time. I totally blame the coaching staff for this loss. They took risks when they should have played it safe, and played it safe when they should have taken risks. It seemed like the whole game plan was upside down.
So now that Harbaugh has decided to go with Kaep again next week (according to post game comments yesterday,) does he get himself in trouble for his "Hot Hand" comment? It appears that Kaep no longer has the hot hand but we will still see him next week...making me even stronger in my feeling that Harbaugh needs to stop jerking everyone around and just tell us that he wants to go with Kaep for the rest of the season.
1. We need to start writing letters to Santa Claus to ask him for wins going forward from this recklessly called game 2. That fling by Kap to Ginn was like tossing away the gin bottle cap and drinking away the game 3. I just don't understand Harbaugh. He needs to activate LMJ. Every player counts towards the quest to get to the Super Bowl. 4. I was very disappointed that we can't defeat the Rams, first ended in a tie, now in a loss. 5. Akers makes the kick, we win. We should have signed that kicker during preseason, one that Akers raved about, that didn't make the team because "Akers" was too good to cut. 6. I am beginning to hate the word "vanilla." It tastes good but awful as a word. Do away with Vanilla!
The issue that seems to be missed here a much bigger one, the Rams are not a cupcake anymore. They're well coached now, and they have a lot of young talent and draft picks. Forget Pete Carroll jumping and yahooing, the Rams are a much scarier opponent in the long-term.
Are people really debating backup running back depth on here? The QB is the problem here, and Alex was blamed for not doing enough, and now his backup is doing the same thing, with turnovers. This team has the best group of receivers in the league, period. With a healthy Gore behind them, they should be torching teams. Why have we not seen LaMichael James yet if there is any issue with depth.
The fact that you call this the best group of receivers in the league pretty much tells me all I need to know.
The biggest error in my mind was Kaep running out if bounds before Akers go ahead kick late in the 4th qtr. The niners have a real shot at the Super Bowl this year. Best not to leave it up to a 2nd year QB who is going to make expected mental errors. Kaep is the future of the franchise, but let that future start next year. Ill take a game manager with this D any day over QB upside that has the potential to cost the niners wins. Kaep gave up the same amount of points as the D today. That should not be overlooked when we are talking about homefield advantage in the playoffs.
This is just his fourth NFL start. Mistakes will happen and its part of the development of any NFL quarterback. This is a great learning experience for Colin and waiting for next season will only stop his growth.
49er Girl you always make laocigl comments and i do not identify you as an Alex Smith Hater!!! You are just another 49er fan that wants their team to succeed.Let’s face it, we are 11-3 and after 8 years of crap finally our team is in a great position to go to the playoffs with a hope to play the big game. Alex Smith has played the best football in his career and still his game is not anything very special. Alex is a great man and a football player but all the bs about lack of production from the OL or WRs is just plain funny to me since it takes a team to play good football. We can not only blame Alex, or the WRs or the OL. Collectively all players on the offense impact the production of our offense and yes Alex has not been perfect as well as our OL or WR!Even if Alex becomes the next hall of fame QB good teams should always be looking for a young back up with huge upside to take over since it takes just one play for your Qb to end up on the bench. To my opinion Alex has played decent football this year however without our defense and Special teams we would have not made it to 11-3. I would like for Alex to relay on his football IQ and have fun playing football. I think all the previous coaches have damaged his natural instincts to have fun out there but hopefully with JH he can show his athletic abilities. GO NINERS
Jimmy H ask Santa for some clothes - because you Emporer of 49ers have been exposed to have none. Your ambition, lack of patience and unresolved issues as a good but not great starting QB back in the day are taking over an excellent football team and SPOILING IT'S ChANCEs of great success. Perhaps you felt jerked around from starter to back-up in your day, but trying to resolve that by screwing around with Alex and really the whole team is unjustifiable. At the start of the season you inserted Colin, unexpectedly, often, now we know why. You had early impulses to put Smith on the Bench. Since this was weeks from Training Camp - you actually should have had an open camp - but no- you were screwing around with Josh Johnson and Tolzein ,wasted time, Jimmy. If you were going to insert players in for starters -should have been at running back and receivers. Would have really liked to see Davis, Jacobs and even Dixon involved more. Now Gore will be sore and tired at the wrong time of the year. Early on Akers was not effective, should have been running kickers in town. The message you send the team - that you can be replaced by another while injured - is not a morale builder. Playing for the play-offs before you get there is fool hearty . Somehow that old song- "Who has it better than us ?" sounds a little dated and one ripe for an ironic, twisted lyric response. The game plan did not seem designed to win a game, but rather designed to get the quarterback some "work" - ala an exhibition game - when the score doesn't count- well this one did and was a loss. It also appears to me that Randy Moss' role as a "clubhouse lawyer" has a role in Alex's benching and getting away from pragmatic football. They don't give style points in the NFL- I'm afraid Jims flirtation with this will lose the recent 49er success. I know football and baseball are different, but the SF Giants are pitching, defense and scratch out a run. The 49ers last year were defense, run and put one between the goals posts and get a little in the end-z one. I'm afraid Jimmy wants his team to compete with some mythological mad bomber in his mind.
Paperback Writer Your comment is awesome. I am a Raider fan, so I watched the 49er game yesterday as a detatched football fan; I don't have a horse in the race. I think it took Harbaugh a lot of balls to make Kaepernick the starter; most NFL coaches woulda gone back to Alex simply out of fear that it's the right thing to do; i.e. not playing to win the Super Bowl but playing to not lose your job. Harbaugh has a screw loose but I mean that in a good way. He's fearless. So in my opinion, Harbaugh has to stay the course, and I think it will pay off; I think Kaepernick is as good as Harbaugh thinks he is, and he will learn from his mistakes yesterday, and lead your team to great places. You Niner fans are freaking out right now, but I think you'll be happy down the line. Also, don't minimize Jeff Fisher; that guy is quietly one of the best coaches in the NFL. He just doesn't strut around like some other idiots like Rex Ryan
Not to make a mountain out a molehill (i.e. it's not why the Niners lost) but is Harbaugh's "QB Pad Slap" in danger of becoming like Singletary's Pants Drop? Hopefully Letterman has no one on staff who can do a Harbaugh impression for laughs ....
One reason why I had the 49ers..not favored vs the Rams was Fisher. On the positive side-Fisher's and the Rams best effort of the year..was a 3 point win in overtime over the beloved 49ers. But,..no I don't see CK beating the Brady's.
With it being a sure 49er loss next week(The Brady's)..this was a 2 game win for the Rams possibly.
So here we are, with 3 losses, one tie, and everyone blaming Ackers. This has nothing to do with Ackers...50+ yard field goals are never gimmes. This is the worst case scenario with 3 games left in the season, and the 49ers have been outplayed by the Rams...the RAMS twice. The Rams are not a good team, and they are not close to a good team. This should not happen, and save the " Well, the Niners outplayed the Bears, but the Rams played us tough" Wrong! A Super Bowl team does not play like this, nor have time for rookie mistakes at QB with 3 games left, and a home field playoff spot now jeopardy. Like it or not, this was not the plays that CK CAN make, but the mistakes he did make that cost the Niners the game. Misreading man/zone defense, taking a safety, not taking care of the ball. He made great runs and throws, but in the end it was Rams 16-13. Niner fans will make every justification in the World for the loss: Ackers, dropped balls, Ginn Jr's mishandling of the toss, but the end the QB did not make the plays needed to win. Once again, this is a bad move to do this now on the part of Harbaugh. This was the easiest of the last four games on the schedule, barring the suspension of the Seahawks DB's. The next three against the Pats, Dolphins (who are better than the Rams), and Seattle would be better suited with Smith at the QB spot. Bench CK til next year, then tell Smith goodbye, and let CK learn in weeks 1-8.
I think you might be letting Ginn off a little too easy. He is one of the softest players in the NFL, and probably didn't fall on that ball because he knew he would get hit and be at the bottom of a pile. Having said that, you're right on Hunter. That and the Williams injury are a bigger deal than anyone seems to be letting on.
With the active fire power on this team, if you are worried about Hunter, and WIlliams, you are lost. Moss, Jacobs, Gore, Crabtree, Davis, Manningham, Dixon etc. are healthy...no other team in the league has even close to this arsenal on the field, not to mention James, and Jenkins. This is ALL about the QB spot.
If you think Jacobs and Dixon are firepower, you are lost. RB depth is an issue without Hunter
Backup running back had absolutely nothing to do with this loss. Jacobs is a capable backup, and we havnt even seen James yet. The Forty Niners aren't even worried about RB.
Fisher and the Rams out played us twice. We should have 2 wins if Ackers wasn't broken right now.
