Golden State Warriors

Gregg Popovich pregame chat: Spurs head coach is just a wee bit sarcastic

Q: Eat well? Fine wine?

Pop: All day and all night. For two days. Accompanied by wine choices. Worked out, too.

Q: What did you say to Steve Kerr the last couple of nights?

Pop: I told him “We’re gonna kick your butt.”

Q: How much did you talk to Steve when he was out, and did you sense his frustration …

Pop: None of your business.

Q: What if someone else asked?

Pop: I’d say none of your DAMN business.

Q: How concerned are you about Tim Duncan’s knee?

Pop: How concerned? Geez, I just don’t know what to do with myself. What do I have to do here, right? Being concerned about things doesn’t really do much. It has nothing to do with if his knee’s going to get better or not. If they say he can play, then he plays. Being concerned is a waste of time.

Q: Is it nice that Steve could be back to coach this game?

Pop: Oh, it’s great. He didn’t enjoy being (away from) the sidelines all this time. He’s a very competitive guy. It’s great that he’s back. It doesn’t diminish what Luke did. Luke is amazing. He did a great job for his first go-around. I’m sure he’s happy to have Steve back, too. Steve’s a different animal. He exudes a lot of confidence and he instills it. A lot of people can’t do that. There’s no formula for it. Having Steve back is very, very, very significant for that club, that group of guys.

Q: Would you like to coach the All-Star Game?

Pop: No comment.

The session lasted another five minutes or so, but the beginning included all of the fireworks. Popovich did say that the pregame hype was understandable, considering the records of the teams, and said he felt some butterflies and that doesn’t happen before most regular season games.

Afterward, Craig Sager wanted to do a one-on-one interview. Popovich refused, citing the quality of Sager’s jacket, and walked into the locker room. After a minute, he came back out and talked to Sager.

Stephen Curry attempted a full court shot from the tunnel, but his attempt fell about 10 feet short. Oh well, he’ll probably make a similar shot during the game.
