Dennis O’Donnell interviews a combative Jay Mariotti, who was either sweaty or wore too much hair gel

Dennis O’Donnell took some time out from breaking news last night to interview Jay Mariotti. The intro montage included a rundown of Mariotti’s career with a heavy focus on the domestic assault cases from 2010 and 2011, to which he pleaded no contest. Mariotti, who was combative throughout most of the interview, was not pleased with the intro.

“I got a kick out of your open, there. There’s so much garbage and lies, right there. I mean, that whole thing is just an internet compilation of crap. And I’d be glad to knock each one down,” he said. “Don’t believe the sensational nonsense.”

When they showed Mariotti in studio with O’Donnell, it appeared as if he had just played three hours of pickup basketball. Was he ever this sweaty on Around the Horn? Maybe he was wearing an enormous amount of Brandon Crawford’s hair product that made it look like he was perspiring heavily?

I just Googled over to the Examiner out of curiosity. I'm assuming that is the sole reason that Mariotti was hired. Anyway, what a mixed bag of great and awful sports journalists!!!

Art Spander. Awesome journalist! Hall Of Famer! I've been reading him since I was old enough to read the paper.

Glenn Dickey. See above minus the HOF. Dickey has been reporting here forever and doing it well.

Mychael Urban. Are you kidding me? How does this guy keep getting work? Wasn't he recently working at a retirement home? He should keep that job. Stick him in the memory center. His tired content will seem new everyday to those folks. Obviously, being Barry Zito's friend carries a lot of water in the Bay Area media.

And now they have Mariotti leading the charge. I don't think he is as bad of a journalist as Urban, but he can't carry Spander or Dickey's jock. He is purely shock value and a beater of long deceased horses. That might work in a really sports rabid and densely populated market (Chicago), but we already have that guy here (Damon Bruce). For this market, I think one is more than enough. But I promise that the Examiner has gotten probably 10x the click traffic since this hire. It's working out for them.

I'm sorry to say, but I don't think Mariotti is long for this area. He might end up being in the same situation Brandon Tierney was kind of in when he was at 95.7. You can tell early on that he's just not a fit for this area. I'm still shocked the SF Examiner brought him in

@Otis Byrd III the hire has you, @Bay Area Sports Guy and all of us talking about the Examiner. When was the last time that ANYONE was talking about the Examiner. This was a genius hire in that respect. On the sports and morality side, eh not so much.

Jim Rome used to get the Chris Everett thing thrown in his face in every new market and he learned to handle it. Grow up Jay.

I'm no Mariotti fan but that seemed like a huge cheap shot.

In all seriousness...did you need to take a shower after writing about Mariotti...again?
