Sometimes a commenter will act like they just cracked the case and are shedding the light on a massive Bay Area media conspiracy theory, and questions whether I’m getting paid on the side by KNBR. Or, if I have a vested interest in that station succeeding. Ha. Couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, the last 24 hours proved they can’t stand me.
First, they unfollowed me on Twitter, and KNBR follows any Bay Area sports fan with a pulse (and no, I’m not referring to Matt Steinmetz’s show on “The Game”). I thought it was because I opened up the Macbook after getting home from the not-so-Superdome last night and questioned the 49ers’ playcalling, secondary and hashtags. Write about hosts getting fired, how they refuse to work with one another or even when they ignore stories they don’t like due to the university they attended? That’s fine, but don’t question our flagship teams!
Maybe some intern was running the account who couldn’t handle my frustrated tone. Or, perhaps it had something to do with a host (whom I don’t particularly care for) announcing this:
Our vacation is coming to a close, kids. Nothing like an egotistical triathlete reminiscing on his days with the D-Backs to make an afternoon seem like torture — and not the fun kind celebrated by Duane Kuiper.
I was hoping against hope that KNBR would let Byrnes walk (or swim, bike, run, whatever he chooses as long as it’s not on terrestrial radio). But no, our days of intelligent sports banter between Tom Tolbert and Ray Ratto are probably coming to a close, at least on a daily basis. In its place will be the same old, “Hey dude, I beat you by 10 strokes with these $100K custom-fitted clubs” screech-fest I learned to avoid last baseball season.
Yes, Byrnes played baseball. He knows much more about what it’s like to reside in a clubhouse and lace ‘em up than myself and most members of the local media. But Ratto challenges Tolbert (like a certain you-know-who used to), and the two discussed almost all relevant sports intelligently. On the other hand, Tolbert once had to explain to Byrnes who George “The Iceman” Gervin is. Ratto also doesn’t plug his Twitter account before every … single … break (and don’t forget about Facebook!), or act as if his love for insipid pop songs somehow makes him seem hipper or younger than the average talk show host.
As much as I don’t appreciate Byrnes, I really like Ratto. He’s one of the smartest, hardest-working media personalities in the region, and he’s actually funny. Funny and loud are two different things.
KNBR probably doesn’t have much use for Byrnes during the MLB offseason. Perhaps that’s why they took their sweet time coming to an agreement with the man who, like almost everyone I’ve come across who’s done an Ironman, CAN’T STOP TALKING ABOUT THE FACT THAT THEY’RE TRAINING FOR AN IRONMAN.
Am I making it too obvious that in a former life I once managed a triathlon store and had to listen to these narcissists prattle on about personal bests for 40-50 hours per week? Did you know that they all shave their legs (and in many cases, most of the rest of their body)? Oh, they’ll show you. There aren’t enough mirrors in a triathlon store, because then you wouldn’t have enough room for the skin tight performance wear, running shoes, bikes, energy gel and all the other weird chemicals triathletes ingest to reach their VO2 max.
This probably doesn’t mean the end of Ratto on KNBR, since he clearly impressed the Cumulus higher-ups enough to become the clear fill-in choice (and we know that Byrnes isn’t about to work five days a week on a consistent basis). And who knows, maybe Byrnes will go back to hosting Sportsphone 680 … nah, that’s a long shot. Byrnes clearly liked that drivetime spot next to Tolbert, and if what I heard was true — Byrnes was holding out for more money, and that’s why he hasn’t been heard on “The Sports Leader” for several weeks — they won’t pay him more just to field calls from drunks and stay until midnight doing postgame shows for the Giants. And, in some cases, even the Warriors.
With Byrnes probably returning and making 3-7 pm a designated “Bro Time” for KNBR, I guess it’s time to start listening more to Chris Townsend and Ric Bucher. I’ve tried to get into The Game’s marquee show, but I’ve had a hard time listening much longer than during the commercials for Tolbert and Ratto. But I’ve got to listen to something, right? I guess there’s always music…

Brynes is coming back to ruin Tom's show? Ratto has been so good.... Oh well, tons of good podcasts and Pandora
Ratto's comments always leave the air silent and awkward.
[...] the story from the good folks at Bay Area Sports Guy about Eric Byrnes coming [...]
Oops, nvm, it's only going to be from 10AM-Noon on Monday. I thought it was going to be from 10AM-Midnight. Nvm. It just means no Steinmetz on Monday. All the other shows will still be on. But yes, I commend them for this.
Any day without Stienmetz is good day. :)
What if it means more guru screaming for people to be fired?
LOL
On a side note, I just checked Facebook, and it looks like 95.7 will have a show or shows on Monday about Black History Month. Henry Wofford, The Guru, and I think Rod Woodson will either be on or are hosting the show. As a Black person, I commend them for that, even though I'm not sure how this is going to work for them programming wise on Monday. Will this mean that none of the main shows will be on on 95.7 on Monday, or will they have a streamline of it on 95.7's website or something?
haha. Wow..... Yeah, AJ, you're probably right, nothing is really going to change on 95.7. When they mentioned the chat on 95.7's Facebook page, people were asking about how it felt that they were behind stations like Radio Disney in the ratings, and that they were like 29th in the ratings or something like that. LOL. It was comical. I couldn't believe that when I saw that, even though I'm not sure if that's true or not though. They are still a new station, and maybe the signal really does affect things. But yeah, they're probably not going to change things right now, which I don't understand. I know this will never happen, and I think I mentioned this or something like this earlier but, 95.7 should just team up with KNBR, but still broadcast A's games. I would move them to KNBR 1050, even though yes, that's not KNBR 680, but this station would get noticed better if they had an AM dial and a stronger signal. In a way, it would give KNBR 1050 it's own identity as well, instead of it being kind of the throw away station to KNBR 680. They could broadcast A's game, and maybe they could get the Raiders back on 1050 as well. They could have all of the programming that is on 95.7, on KNBR 1050. I would them move Damon to 680, and I would put Fitz and maybe Rod, with the 95.7 crew on KNBR 1050. I know all of that will never happen, and the people at Entercom (the company that owns 95.7) would not want to be partners with Cumulus (the company that owns KNBR 680 and 1050, as well as KGO), but it would make sense though. It would give the A's more local notoriety and the hosts on 95.7 could probably be more known if they were on a KNBR station. Does anyone agree? I know this seems like a weird idea but if 95.7 keeps getting plowed in the ratings, and if radio stations like Radio Disney are beating them in the ratings as well, maybe a partnership with KNBR should be considered, if that ever was to happen.
I don't see that ever happening, but it is an interesting idea. We almost have an embarrassment of riches in the bay area with sports. I like your idea and they could potentially spread out their coverage. You could pick up a 3rd AM station and have KNBR focused on Niners/Giants/SF Colleges/Stanford, 1050 with focus on Raiders/A's/Warrior/Berkeley, and a 3rd station focused on the south bay for the Sharks/Quakes/Cats/SJSU. Wishful thinking that will never happen, but still a great idea for sports fans.
As expected, the question was asked about pulling away from so many gimmick segments and no answer was given.
Whats the difference between a Bentley and a Porcupine? On a porcupine, the pricks are on the outside. Joke borrowed and modified to fit.
Radnich today kept saying the 49ers had won the Super Bowl.even insisting the "Giants didn't like it". Kreuger then reminded him they LOST the Super Bowl. A senior moment. But hey,for a second, Raddy had me convinced!
To give him the benefit of the doubt..it could have been the Vicodin talking.
AJ-just thought it was worth a shot. Halberman at night, Bucher instead of bellboy are good personnel moves at least. Still a lot more fixing needed. ( more sharks. A's and college stuff would be a start).
I think 95.7 will probably talk a lot of A's during baseball season, especially after the season they had last year. I'm sure there will be a lot of A's talk on the Townsend and Bucher show, considering how Townsend is around the A's a lot during baseball season, and he used to do the A's pre-and post game show on 95.7. As far as the Sharks go, they just don't move the needle like the 49ers, Giants, Warriors, and even the A's and the Raiders. Yeah, it would be good if both KNBR and 95.7 had more Sharks talk or made us more familiar with the Sharks, but the interest in the Sharks just isn't there until playoff time. Yeah, more college sports talk would be good too, but like the Sharks, Bay Area college sports just doesn't move the needle as much, even after the season Stanford and San Jose State football just had, and Cal bringing in a new football head coach. I mean yeah, it would be good if both stations talked about the sports teams that aren't talked about as much, especially now that everyone has said what has been said about the Super Bowl, but a lot of the hosts probably don't want to risk having low ratings.
OBIII - I hear what you're saying about the Sharks and, to a certain degree, I agree with you. However, if you go back just a year or so, the Sharks were actually drawing more fans than the A's and, at times, the Warriors. The Warriors just had a big hoopla about selling out a 13th consecutive game which hasn't happened since 1995. Let that sink in... 1995... the first term of the Clinton administration. Meanwhile, the Sharks have had sold out seasons for 13 consecutive years. We all know the Sharks don't move the needle like NFL, MLB, and NBA, but there is no denying there is a rabid fan base that would tune in for Sharks talk. I also believe it's a chicken/egg problem. They don't talk Sharks because no one calls in about them and no one calls in because they don't talk about it. However, look at a recent 957 FB post. They asked "now that the Super Bowl is over, what team are you going to devote your sports passion and energies to?" More than half of the 500 respondents said Sharks. I just fail to believe that they can't do a 20 minute segment in each show for hockey fans when there is so much repetition of content. But like I said, Barrett will never change, so why bother?
Supposedly Barrett is going to have a chat via Twitter on Friday afternoon. Since I can barely figure out E-mail; hopefully one of our wonderful posters will tweet him about "bro" radio, fake arguements and laughter and stupid segments and topics (like potential 49er-Raider trades; memo to station: that hasn't happened since the late 80's so why waste time with it?)
TommyJ - why even bother? He only answers softball questions and when he bothers to take a meaningful question, it's always answered with a generic response that never addresses the actual question. I can already see it... Q. What is with all the fake arguments and laughter during the shows? A. We're very happy with our hosts and their sense of humor. Q. When will the NHL Rush show be returning? A. We have Brodie Brazil on 5x a week. No one covers the Sharks more than us. Q. Why do you need all those silly gimmick segments and "what if" topics? It's pointless. A. We have several listeners who think they're great. And so on, and so on. Brodie, the "Sharks insider", filled in yesterday for Lund and spent literally 4 minutes on the Sharks while it was about 30 minutes of the Warriors, 10 minutes on the Raiders Mt. Davis, and the rest of the time spent on the Niners, essentially rehashing everything that had been said previously in the week. There is really no use asking Barrett or the station anything because nothing is going to change.
What did I tell you... here's a typical response: Q. why has soccer been forbidden on your station? KNBR has Quakes on, so does CSN, You're own guy Dibs is involved, why exclude it? A. Matt we always evaluate if making changes are needed. Right now we feel strong about our content direction and choices. Barrett was asked directly about Quakes coverage and didn't answer the question at all.
Did anyone hear the sound clips from the Lucky Break thing last night? They played some today when Brodie and JD were filing in for Lund and Papa, which should be permanent BTW. Anyway, one of the guys auditioning says something like "this is crunch time at lunch time with Joe Schmo" or whatever his name was and someone from 95.7 had feedback to the effect of "you sound like you spent too much time naming everything". Uh, pot, meet kettle... and I think it might have been Barrett. Hypocrisy run amok.
I know, I laughed when I heard that.
I remember Byrnes launching "face-first" into an entire schtick on "what is up with the beards" during last year's Stanley Cup Playoffs. The "Joe Walsh" inflected voice and kooky baseball "DUDE" knock-off persona only goes so far. Needless to say I am very unhappy with his return. Tommy's on radio IQ will drop 20 points again.
I hear David Lee Roth when he talks myself. But like I said before, his last Comcast appearance he was as close to normal as I've heard him. Less chemicals is better for Eric.
I hated Ratto at first, but I have to admit, he and Tolbert work well together. And everything that everyone is saying about Byrnzee is true. He is so full of himself. Everything always goes back to his playing days, and he tries too hard to be a cool guy with his snoopiedie dog music. When he's on its definitely time to change the station. Townsend and Bucher are ehh, ok i guess for a few minutes. The thing that really gets me about Townsend is his annoying laugh. Everything has to be laughed at like he just heard the greatest punch line ever? Really, why be soo dramatic? If you haven't heard it, just listen it for a few seconds and you'll hear that laugh multiple times. Agree, Ipod time it is....
I agree with on Townsend. I haven't heard him laugh this much ever. LOL. Not when he was on KNBR in the early 2000's when he used to updates for Gary's show, and not when he was on at nights on 95.7. Maybe he wants Bucher to feel like he's funny, but some of the stuff that they joke about is funny at times, but it's not THAT funny. As far as Byrnes goes, I don't know if he's full of himself, but he does try too hard to come off as a cool guy, when he's more of a high strung hyper guy.
AND it confirms..he seeks out this blog. Unfriended or not.
How funny. My post on Radnich and email? He did it again..Krueger winked and asked if he could confirm what written, Kate Scott asked if he had gotten anymore? Radnich said "Many". No shame,no ethics, just a living old, old, clown hanging on for every last dime.
Hey somebody here dug up my Feb 12 2012 post of the Jeremy Lin slur on ESPN/1050. And the negative votes..and no comments. Racism is very alive.
Disagree. Ratto is tired. His jokes are tired. He's better as a 2 minute commentary.
Before the Superbowl, FITZ and Brooks said the Niners have the FITZ n Brooks MOJO!!!
LOL - NOW I know what was wrong with them!
Speaking of Bucher once again, he said he would keep Alex Smith over Goldson. He had a point and you could make an interesting argument for that, but Chris Townsend brought up that Alex Smith would be making $8 million next season, and who's going to want to pay that to a backup QB? The 49ers should move on. Who's going to want to talk about this overplayed QB controversy again next season? Also, Alex Smith doesn't want to be a backup. He's been a good soldier in losing his job to injury, but both sides really should move on.
I don't think Bucher is that dumb. Probably just one of the game's usual manufactured arguments.
haha. Bucher isn't, but sometimes I don't know. LOL. I agree that it probably is part of 95.7's usual manfactured arguments though. It's kind of funny how a couple of callers agreed to keep Alex Smith over Goldson. LOL
Sorry, And today KNBR was ripping Lowell Cohn on Raddys show. And Radnich you could see didn't care what Lowell would think. His blog and your blog have one thing in common. Me. And it proves KNBR is nobody's friend.
That's what got Cohn fired from the Chron in the first place cause he pissed off the Niner brass.
I doubt that..he was on good terms with Walsh. He and Dickey and all the rest were either let go or told to take the semi golden parachute to cut costs. And now the Chron has columnists who's style are out of a mold. Throw them in a hat,and pick one...they all could be written by one person from the sound of them. That's the truth.
Insulting Lowell Cohn is a bad thing? Cohn's questions at the Jim Harbaugh news conference were idiotic as usual.
Well then I guess you hate Raddy for then turning around on KRON tonight and saying almost the very same words, changed slightly to COMPLIMENT Lowell Cohn for getting in Harbaugh's face. That's real used car salesman work Radnich did. He is scary crooked.
Yeah, Lowell Cohn is an idiot. That guy should just retire. He had problems with Singletary and now Harbaugh, and he wanted Greg Roman to be fired. The guy needs to retire now. What a douche.
BASG, that's too bad that KNBR unfollowed you on Twitter man. The stuff you posted on here and tweeted about, wasn't really that offensive. It wasn't like you were insulting anyone, or putting out a rumor that wasn't true. Yeah, I agree that probably some intern was running the KNBR account.
Agree with this entire article. I tuned out the Mr. T show after listening to he and Byrnes a few times. Everything Byrnes says is predictable and self serving. Ratto is not self serving, he's all about talking sports in a way two knowledgeable friends would. Another bad move by KNBR.
Byrnes is horrible. Then already had one athlete in the studio with Tolbert who is barely coherent with his thoughts. They didnt need another one with Byrnes.
Byrnes is good after a Giants game. Either Ratto has gotten better, or he's the same but he's growing on me.
This is not good news. Who runs KNBR? 18 year olds?
They think they need bro radio to compete with Jason Barrett's married with kids guys trying to do bro radio. HEHEHEHEHE g spot!!! LOLOLOLOL happy ending!!
And another possibility? On Comcast last month Bryrnes was normal..not so bad. Even dressed up and combed his hair...a big change over last year where he was hopped up on something, figity, and kept telling Barry Tompkins "Check this!". Maybe Eric had a intervention and recuperation..just a guess.
I called this. I know on this blog I said..KNBR knows Byrnes is worthless all year...just during the Giants season where his fanatical act works. Remember-- I said he wasn't let go for good..wait until baseball season. Byrnes would do it for free..he craves the spotlight and it makes him feel like he's still in the ML's.
Yeah right, something else that Stan "called." Where's the link? Not a song and a dance, but an actual link!
BASG said he heard Byrnes was holding out for MORE $$$$$, so I guess you beleive differently - and did so in a nice coherent way.
