With 2013 around the corner, it will soon be time to turn the page and focus more on the season to come than the season that concluded. But you never forget any of these seasons, really, and the championship years are infinitely more fun to revisit. The commemorative movies and box sets that follow a championship these days help, too.
I have one last San Francisco Giants Collector’s Edition 8-disc Box Set left to give away, so you can watch individual moments from the postseason and prove to yourself that you weren’t dreaming. That really happened. Buster Posey really did hit a grand slam off Mat Latos. Jeremy Affeldt really did fall down some stairs in the dugout. The Reds really did strand 214 runners over the last four innings.
And that was just Game 5 of the NLDS, which is included in this set.
Another disc holds the key to the magical Barry Zito start in Game 5 of the NLCS that got everyone believing in not just the Giants or redemption, but the absurdly sublime. Or the sublimely absurd, take your pick. It gave you the feeling that the postseason was going into another gear/realm/galaxy, and the best course of action was to sit back and enjoy the ride … man.
It’s hard to get a handle on what the “#RallyZito” thing was all about if you weren’t on Twitter. The Giants needed to listen to Hunter Pence yell things with his eyes reaching out and touching each player in the dugout. (I’m not kidding. I’m pretty sure Pence’s eyes ate at least a bag of seeds during the playoffs, too.) The fans needed to spend their time between the Game 4 loss and Zito’s start to wrap their heads around what would probably happen (Zito gets shelled, everyone comes home for a post-postseason press conference explaining how it all went wrong — in other words, an afternoon of chatter about Pablo Sandoval being too fat and Tim Lincecum being too skinny) and what could happen.
Actually, Zito succeeding was impossible to imagine. He’d be lucky to reach the fourth inning, right? So people invested in their Twitter avatars instead of potential baseball pain. Zito on a unicorn. Zito modeling. Shirtless Zito mugging for the camera in his own mirror after shaving (my avatar that day). ZitoZitoZitoZitoZitoZitoZitoZitoZitoZitoZitoZito.
Then Zito pitched, and it was as if the karma buildup from Twitter carried him to greatness. Weird, since he shut down his Twitter account years ago due to the abuse he was getting.
Now here’s your contest question.
Be honest: before it happened, did you think Zito had a snowball’s chance of pitching well Game 5 of the NLCS?
Feel free to add in any #RallyZito anecdotes, where you were when you watched the game, whether or not you played some Jack Johnson songs in the background to keep things extra mellow and Zito-y while the game was progressing. You can write something about the RBI bunt single. (“Zito dropped a pearl” is one of the select few radio calls from the 2012 postseason that’ll be heard forever around here, so thanks to Mike Krukow for that.)
Just write something about that game, and on Monday I’ll choose one lucky commenter at random and they’ll get a copy of the Box Set on DVD or Blu-ray (winner’s choice). Then they’ll be able to watch this classic Zito game on a loop.
You know you have to do some last-minute shopping — why not give yourself a chance at a last-minute gift for yourself? Good luck!

Sports just aren't fun without good stories and likable personalities - and Barry, with his history of greatness, his struggles, his guitar-playing affability and good taste in socks & sweaters, is one of our best stories. I love rooting for the guy. No one ever questioned his effort or his resolve. They just recalled all of the failures. Could he ever be counted on to come up big in crunch time? And the rest being RallyZito is history.
Oh man not a chance. I just wanted to watch till the bitter end, and be glad we won the West and handed the Dodgers a handful of crushing losses at the end of the season. All the more reason why Zito's start was legendary, as much (ok maybe not AS much) as Buster's GS off Latos.
I actually loved Zito. I've been pulling for this guy since 09 to comeback, never felt more proud to be a Zito guy when that moment came on. Zito was Mr. Big Game this season, and I had full confidence for him. (almost got a Zito Fathead wen it was on sale).
I thought Zito had a chance for one reason: 08/07/12- Zito 6.2 IP, 2 ER, Win @ St. Louis
I would love to have this box set!!! My brother the biggest giants fan ever missed some of the run because he was studying abroad in the Dominican Republic I would love to relive this amazing run with him through that box set. What impressed me most was how fundamentally sound the giants played defense to make their playoff run successful! I also the pitching was amazing and bringing Lincecum out of the bull-pin was genius! I would love to relive that amazing playoff/ World Series run over and over!
Paris Hilton and I are very close--we watched the game together and were both very surprised that his years as a celebrity wannabe cool kid didn't adversely affect his fitness level #RallyZito
I don't think anyone saw this coming. Also the Giants never lost again after #RallyZito.
Being down 3-1 in STL and after having already come back from 2 down in CIN, I was doubtful about their chances of pulling off another epic comeback. But Zito had been pitching well and anything was possible. I had the game on but wasn't watching it closely, and then when the Giants got a good lead, I didn't want to jinx them by watching it closely. So, I need the DVDs to see all the highlights!! :)
Did I think Zito had a snowball's chance in hell of pitching well? Yes. Zito isn't great, but he is still capable of pitching well. The thing is, I don't necessarily EXPECT him to pitch well. And I never ever would have predicted him to pitch as well as he did. What an amazing game. BTW, my #rallyzito pic was the one of him lounging around with his guitar on the Marin Headlands. You know the one. Oh, Zito.
I started #RallyZito with some friends. It was an inside joke that spiraled out of control. I thought Zito could give us six strong, as long as he had all his pitches. Safe to say, I was happy with how things turned out.
I was in Hawaii and not really paying close attention to the game. So I really don't know. But the Cards offense was looking tough. But we won that game, and a couple others after that.
I knew the giants were going to win game 5 of the nlcs because the giants had won something like 11 or 12 straight games when zito had started. Also, zito had been clutch all season long for them. Every time the giants needed to win a game and zito was on the mound, he was lights out and always gave the giants a chance. I also knew with his pitching he was going to keep the cardinals hitters off balance sense they were all power hitters.
Yeah I did, the comeback was on and particles from Murph and Mac always help in these situations. Zeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetoooooooooo!
I believed in RallyZito. Just wish I could have watched the game instead of listening at work. But it was better than nothing.
In one game, it doesn't matter who is pitching, there's always a chance. It was fantastic watching the game at Marin BrewCo.
After the whole #RallyZito thing i thought it was possible, we had his back so he would have our's. It worked out, I'm happy.
As I recall, didn't he get in trouble in the very first inning? 2 on.and he got out of it with little damage. BUT..as you have read me write a few times now..when Zito had the bases loaded and nobody out?...and Giants were behind 2-0,I think...When Zeets struck that guy out with the bases loaded...I FELT IT..and posted THAT STRIKEOUT is going to get the Giants to the World Series on bang's live blog.. Like a confirmed premonition was that K. And of course, the Giants did go to the WS...
Seeing how Zito got us out of our early season rut and delivered our 1st win, I knew anything was possible. His season was just a magical experience and for him to be included on the postseason roster had to give him a psychological boost going into the playoffs. With that said..no, I didn't see it coming. I was resting my hopes in that he could at least give us 4 innings with 2-3 ER and have Lincecum or anyone out of the bullpen win the game for us. I must say though, in Game 5 and in the WS, I saw a determined Zito that channeled Vogey in his demeanor. He just seemed to stop thinking and just pitch. Maybe it had something to do with Hector or maybe the "CY Young" switch went off in his head, I don't know. But We're all glad he came through! Go Giants!!
Guy not only single-handedly save the season, but he outduels Verlander in World Series and might actually get a contract extension after years of us moaning for the Giants to cut him loose. Only PhatPanda coming out as a vegan would be a bigger suprise.
Yes, I thought he had it in him, but then, I'm a long time Zito Apologist. I 'm sucker for a comeback story & sports have some of the best ones. The part of the game that stands out for me is the shot of him at first base after his RBI bunt hit. The look on his face was a mixture of relief, surprise and happiness. Like the weight of the previous years was lifted off his shoulders. He gave the team a shot to stay alive both from the mound and with his bat.
Two things had me particularly optimistic: Zito's success in big games (every Dodgers game since joining the Giants, opening start in CO, previous regular season games against Cardinals), and the Giants success in the postseason in 2010 and 2012 in games I wouldn't have expected (Halladay, Lee, Carpenter, etc), which led to me being very confident against Verlander in the World Series.
All I could think about was the 2004 ALCS.I've seen the documentary that ESPN did about it, so all I could think about was Kevin Millar's speech. He knew that if they won game five they would win that series. That's kind of how I felt about about our chances. I knew that if the Giants could win game 5, they would win the series.
Hate to be the "all is forgiven" type but Game 5 erased a lot of frustration over his mega deal. All worth it? It was even without him in 2010. This was beautiful if for nothing else to see Zito contribute to a championship at the most crucial moment.
Would LOVE to give this to my hubby as a late Christmas gift! Game 5 was a "pinch yourself" game where you're not sure what is happening is really registering. Much like Cainer's perfecto.
Snowball's chance? Sure. He had a nice close to the year and figured he could conjure up that magic one more time. Truthfully, all we really needed were 5 from him. You wanna talk about the bigger leap of faith? Barry Zito to get the best of Verlander in game 1 of the WS.
I posted #RallyZito on Facebook and Twitter along with the same #unicornhour photo. Did I expect that out of Zito after his NLDS appearance? No. Did I expect the Giants to get eliminated that night? After Game 4 I sure did but then I went to Polk street, forgot about it, and woke up the next day with a raging headache and #RallyZito hashtags ready to go. He surprised me but when he throws strikes and doesn't walk batters, he doesn't suck. He only had one walk that night and it was intentional.
didn't think he had a chance in hell
How much did I doubt that Zito start? I refused to get into the whole #rallyzito thing for fear of jinxing it. Even with all the games we had won with him starting, I felt if I all of sudden jumped on his bandwagon, it would derail and catch fire. So you are welcome fellow SF Giants fans! My non bandwagon ways proves to be the winning formula for us.
Game 5 was the day after I got back Fromm honeymoon, so I was just relaxing and re-adjusting to west coast time while watching the game. At best, I hoped Zito could go 4 or 5, keep the Giants in the game, and let the bullpen do its best 2010 NLCS G6 imitation. Even a quality start would have been a win, in my book.
Yes and it all started the night before when the #rallyzito movement began. It was just Zito's time to shine and with the Giants coming back from a 3-0 deficit to eliminate the Reds it just felt like no matter what the Giants were gonna figure out a way to win the game and the series. Humm baby!! Go Giants!!
After 2010, I don't know what to believe. I was sleep deprived with a newborn and was already planning for Joe Panik's debut. Game 5 was glorious. Did I expect it? No f'n way. But I didn't expect much if anything this year. I wrote them off 20 times. Shows what I know.
As a long tim eGIANTS fan I always have hope and beleive that the GIANTS are going to win. So when Zito started the game against the CARDINALS my hope and belief was high. I knew that if he could keep the GIANTS close then we had a very good chance of winning. I was at home watching the game with my husband and daughter. I wa sin touch on the phone or texting my mom about the game. Ziot just pitched a MARVELOUS game
On vacation with my family, I at at the bar at ESPNZone at Downtown Disney, awaiting the first pitch of Game 5 of the NLCS. There is no way I saw Zito's performance happening because, well...I've seen a lot of Zito over the past 6 seasons. Never have I been happier to be wrong! Zito saved the season and quite honestly his career. This was clearly a team of destiny with Zito as one key components. While I wasn't there in person, I'll always remember the day I sat on front of the tv that night, drinking an IPA, and toasted to the resurrection of a baseball career. Cheers to Zito and the 2012 San Francisco Giants!
Being honest, I did not expect much - but I did think he'd have a chance to not get the Giants in a position where they'd be out of it. NEVER, EVER, saw that coming though I did participate in full with #RallyZito and used one of his modelling photos because it still makes me laugh. I will say that after Game 5, I expected him to do well in the World Series and he did! Resurrected his career forever here in SF...all is forgiven.
Would love to have the box set to go along with my 2010 set. Save those great memories forever!
