Mychael Urban leaves Comcast SportsNet Bay Area

Last night Mychael Urban announced a change to his Twitter handle, dropping the “CSN” portion and moving in what looks like a new direction:

Urban’s tweet caused people to wonder what was going on and if Urban would continue to serve as CSN Bay Area’s “MLB Insider.” Here’s the official statement from Comcast:

“Mychael Urban is no longer employed with Comcast SportsNet. We appreciate his contributions over the last few years and we wish him well.”

No word on what led to Urban’s departure or any potential replacement(s). It also isn’t clear whether Comcast is looking for another MLB Insider or might split the duties and employ separate Giants and A’s Insiders.

Urban recently left KNBR to serve as an “Insider” for 95.7 FM “The Game” along with CSN Insiders including Matt Maiocco, Matt Steinmetz and Brodie Brazil.

On Rich Lieberman it seems to be three or four camps of reason.
1: KNBR and Giants easy pickens revenge for his 95.7 affiliation.
2: He didnt get along with Comcast fellow hosts.
3: His personal life was..too much fun.
4:Outside reason? Mark Purdy made the whole “insider” thing a joke.

I like Urbs, but let’s face it; guys like him are a dime a dozen. Get some new guy in there for less money and see if he’s any good. there are only about 300 kids who would do his job for $10 an hour.

Its not unexpected is it? Urban has been on the low end of generating buzz and he depended WAY too much on Tim Lincecum’s Dad that it just started to sound pathetic.
He did have a FEW grand moments of glory but when I wanted to know “inside” stuff I would read Baggs or you or hell Amy G is 10x better ( no I am not being sexist ).

So no surprise but I got $10 he’ll be back in Spring of 2012 when CSN can’t find anyone or no one will listen to Raj Mathai blabbering about Brian’s beard.

Urban lost a lot of fans when he pretty much called fans pansies for complaining about Posey getting ran over.

I like watching CSN sport caster’s reviews of Giants and A’s, however Urban always struck me as arrogant and that his opinion was sacrosanct. I can’t say Urban did a bad job at all, but I can say he didn’t provide more fact than opinion, or that he was instrumental to me watching CSN coverage of baseball. Finally, when Urban tried to diminish Posey’s catastrophic ankle injury calling fans to get over it and not be wimps, I realized he didn’t get it. I don’t have to wish him well, and I’m glad I don’t have to listen to him.… Read more »
