San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said “the chances are better than 50-50” that Patrick Willis played against the Houston Texans, but he’ll be in street clothes tonight for the second straight game. Nnamdi Asomugha will also sit out, along with Quinton Patton, Chris Harper, John Skelton, Jermaine Cunningham and Joe Looney.
The Texans’ offense is known for being strong in several key areas, chief among them play action and the way they use tight ends Owen Daniels and Garrett Graham in the passing game. For those reasons, Michael Wilhoite will face a much tougher challenge in his second NFL start than he did in his first.
We’ll also get to see what Tramaine Brock can do in nickel situations. He could get matched up against Hall of Fame candidate Andre Johnson quite a bit, so he’ll also face a tougher go than he did last week.
This game provides the opportunity for the 49ers to go over .500 and get within a game of the Seattle Seahawks, who lost earlier today to the Indianapolis Colts (my preseason Super Bowl pick).
