Hanson Raiders 2The Oakland Raiders are no strangers to negative attention from national media. In fact, many members of the Raider Nation honestly believe that many in the national media hate the Raiders and intentionally dole out the disrespect.

Regardless of the intent of the media, they sure know how to needle Raiders fans, and this offseason is no different. Early on, Rotoworld declared that the Raiders had the worst roster in the league. More recently, ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback Ron Jaworski ranked quarterback Matt Flynn as the worst starting QB in the NFL.

Now, Pro Football Talk has jumped in on the party and has ranked the Raiders number 32 in their pre-season power rankings. Raiders fans will without a doubt take serious issue with this ranking. The next two slots were given to the Cleveland Browns and the Jacksonville Jaguars, two teams that easily fit into the argument for worst in the league.

According to their record, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars were tied for the worst team in the NFL last season. However, after a number of free agent signings, the Chiefs were able to effectively remove themselves from talk of being the worst during the offseason.

The Jags, however, did not impress very much this offseason, and it is not entirely clear to me how they jumped ahead of both the Raiders and the Browns. Outrage for fans of both teams  would be justified with these rankings. However, with that being said, it is hard to argue that the Raiders should not even be in the discussion for one of the league’s worst teams.

Yes, the Raiders did a lot this off season to improve their roster, but the fact of the matter is last season they were easily one of the worst teams in the league. On top of that, they will enter the year with a lot of uncertainties, one of which is at the most important spot on the roster: the QB position. I find it very doubtful that the Raiders will end the 2013 season as the worst team in the league, but until they prove me right, national media will likely continue to think of them as one of, if not the league’s worst team.
