Jon Heyman reported that the San Francisco Giants and Buster Posey are in “serious discussions about a long-term deal.” We’re hearing that both sides are even further along in the process.
“Deal is signed, Posey is a Giant for life,” according to a source close to the team. “No word on years or dollars.”
Posey turned 26 two days ago, so a contract that would keep him in San Francisco for the duration of his career would probably be at a length of at least 10 years. Since we don’t have any details, here are some other long deals signed by superstar players.
— Joey Votto signed a 10-year deal with the Cincinnati Reds for $225,000,000 that runs through 2023, with a $20,000,000 team option in 2024 that includes a $7,000,000 buyout.
— Joe Mauer signed an eight-year contract (2011-18) that will pay him $184,000,000.
— Prince Fielder’s nine-year deal pays him $214,000,000.
— Albert Pujols signed a 10-year, $252,000,000 pact before the 2012 season.
Something tells me 10 years and $250,000,000 sounds about right, but we’ll just have to wait and see. There’s no word on when this deal will be announced, but Matt Cain’s five-year, $127,000,000 extension was announced four days before Opening Day last year. There are only three days until Opening Day 2013, so we might get a press conference pretty soon. In the meantime, if you were contemplating whether or not to purchase a Posey jersey it’s probably safe to do so.
Our source thought the overall package would be in the $180M-$190M range. Here’s what Buster Olney is hearing:
