Stephen Curry “anxious” about today’s All-Star announcement

The 2014 NBA All-Star Game starters will be announced on TNT at 4 pm PST. Stephen Curry will be at home during that time, and the guy who generally seems pretty cool on the court may or may not be gnawing on his fingernails while sitting on the couch, eyes wide open.

“I’ll be at home, so I’ll be watching it. I’ve watched it every year since I’ve been in the league and it’s kind of surreal, understanding the situation of what might happen,” Curry said after Thursday’s practice.

“It’ll be fun. I’m kind of anxious about it. Not really nervous or nothing, but anxious to get it over with because there’s a lot of buildup around it. Hopefully we’ll hear good news, get ready for the game tomorrow because it’s another day, but this is something I’ll pay attention to.”

Curry moved into second in the fan balloting when the NBA last released the returns on Jan. 9.

  1. Kobe Bryant (LAL) 844,538
  2. Stephen Curry (GS) 677,372
  3. Chris Paul (LAC) 651,073
  4. Jeremy Lin (Hou) 471,980
  5. James Harden (Hou) 338,788
  6. Russell Westbrook (OKC) 260,499
  7. Tony Parker (SA) 195,328
  8. Damian Lillard (Por) 162,363
  9. Klay Thompson (GS) 108,404
  10. Ricky Rubio (Min) 97,265

If Curry can hold off Paul, he’ll make the Western Conference All-Star team for the first time, and as a starter to boot. Last year Curry was left off the squad entirely, and in response he turned up his play. Or seemed too, anyway.

  • 2012/13 Pre All-Star: 21 ppg, 6.6 apg, .434 FG%, 3.1 3pg
  • 2012/13 Post All-Star: 26 ppg, 7.4 apg, .476 FG%, 4.1 3pg

Curry’s numbers this year: 23.5 ppg, 9.2 apg, .442 FG%, 3.2 3pg

I asked Jackson if last year’s “snub” lit a fire under Curry.

“I’m not sure. I just think he was a great player the entire year last year. He continued to get healthy as the season progressed and played with an edge. I’m not sure what the All-Star team or not making it had to do with it,” said Jackson, who made his true feelings about today’s announcement be known ahead of time a couple minutes later.

“If he’s not a starter on the All-Star team … man, c’mon. This is a joke. I’ve been trying to hold it in, but I just had to let that be known.”
