Well, I finally made it. Covering my first San Francisco Giants game from where the beat writers toil away. I don’t get clubhouse access, so you probably won’t see me on Showtime anytime soon, but this is still ridiculously great and kind of surreal. To be sitting 10 seats away from Henry Schulman at the same time he sends a tweet responding to someone who called him a “(bad word for gay) liberal,” well, it’s what I dreamed of while reading the Sporting Green at the breakfast table as a kid.
I get to cover tonight’s series opener against the Phillies, as well as the games on Sunday (Lincecum vs. Oswalt) and Tuesday (Bumgarner vs. some dude on the Pirates). Well, unless I do something stupid tonight, which is always a possibility. (No, I’m not going to cheer, although a clenched fist under the table might occur if the Giants win this evening.)
One of the most noticeable things about sitting here (besides the view), is the sound of the crack of the bat without music, crowd noise or highlights in the background. Got to watch Brandon Belt, Eli Whiteside, Mike Fontenot and Chris Stewart take BP, then listened to a hilarious conversation about a recent Deadspin article between two local media personalities I can’t name. I better get going because all the media people who know the drill just left the press box. More updates to come…
