mac and cheeseRemember yesterday when I wrote about how a bunch of us are going to watch the San Francisco Giants play the Atlanta Braves on Friday, and how we’ll meet up at The Melt on 3rd and Townsend before the game? And how THE MELT will provide free melts, soup, soft serve ice cream, and non-alcoholic beverages for 10 people (five winners, who all get to bring a guest who can also eat free), and one of those winners will receive two tickets to Friday’s game for free as well?

Well, I don’t have much else to add to that. It’s still a great prize, and this is the second of three contest posts. Your comment in each post counts as an entry, which means you can enter up to three times. If you want to enter in yesterday’s contest where I asked you to name what you despise most about the Atlanta Braves, go ahead. We’ll wait.

Man, that was quick! Now it’s time for today’s question:

If the season ended today, who would be the San Francisco Giants’ MVP?

Yeah, yeah, the season still has 130 games left. But a lot has gone on.

In 10 series, the Giants have swept four teams and they’ve been swept twice. They have 11 comeback wins. There have been many heroes and far more GIFs. The first month-plus of the season has been pretty action-packed, and even after a pretty ho-hum loss to Cliff Lee on Monday night, the Giants are in first place in the National League West.

Back to those heroes … who has been the Most Valuable Player so far? Who has been the best player, the most indispensable, the one that has contributed the most to the Giants’ record of 19-13?

Buster Posey SF Giants funny faceThe hitters

Buster Posey (reigning NL MVP): .283/.392/.505, 4 HR, 13 XBH, 17 BB, 14 SO, 1.1 rWAR*, 1.1 fWAR*

Brandon Crawford (slick-fielding SS with product-laden hair): .243/.317/.467, 5 HR, 12 XBH, 1.4 rWAR, 1.0 fWAR

Hunter Pence (a rather unique player): .297/.331/.516, 6 HR, 5 SB, 15 XBH, 1.0 rWAR, 1.4 fWAR

Pablo Sandoval (still portly, but nobody cares these days): .323/.358/.468, 4 HR, 10 XBH, 0.7 rWAR, 1.1 fWAR

The pitchers

Madison Bumgarner (nearly perfect before last night): 46.2 IP, 2.31 ERA, 3.06 FIP, 43 SO, 11 BB, 1.1 rWAR, 0.9 fWAR

Sergio Romo (Fear the what?): 15.2 IP, 1.72 ERA, 1.74 FIP, 18 SO, 1 BB, 12 SV, 0.6 rWAR, 0.7 fWAR

* rWAR = Baseball Reference; fWAR = Fangraphs

So who’s your Giants MVP? One of these six players, or do you want to order off the menu?

Answer in the comments and you might win a free grilled cheese sandwich, soup, ice cream and more while hanging out with us! (And by “us,” I’m referring to Carmen “Giants Gamer Babe” Kiew, Wendy Thurm, Bay Area Stats Guy, East Bay Sports Guy and Ruthless Sports Guy … and me.) And even if you don’t win, come on down to The Melt before Friday’s game anyway because it’s a ridiculously convenient spot to get fuel up on grilled cheese sandwiches, soup, ice cream and drinks (beer is available too, just not for free) before the game. Plus, you can hang out with a bunch of Giants fans before Matt Cain squares off against Tim Hudson and the Braves. Good luck!
