Rich Lieberman 415 recently reported that Eric Byrnes was no longer the host on Sportsphone 680. With all due respect to Mr. Lieberman, this isn’t exactly news. Byrnes stopped hosting Sportsphone months ago, in the process becoming the person most commonly heard with Tom Tolbert.
It got to the point where Tolbert started acting like Byrnes was the regular co-host — he could have been trying to make Byrnes more comfortable, but it really did appear as if Tolbert and Byrnes could be a long-term partnership.
The real question for the radio-obsessed (any of you out there?) is this: will Byrnes come back to KNBR?
He hasn’t been on for at least a month now, and from what I’m hearing he will probably return. Or there’s a 50/50 shot he’ll return. Or maybe he’ll never return. Byrnes said this on Twitter a couple weeks ago:
So what’s the holdup? Has Byrnes’ triathlon training gotten so intense that he doesn’t have time to co-host a 4-hour radio show at the current time?
It probably won’t surprise you to hear that Byrnes’ absence has to do with money. According to a multiple sources, Byrnes wants to be paid commensurate with what a person hosting a drivetime radio show would/should expect to make, and Cumulus’ offer isn’t enough. That’s why you’ve heard Ray Ratto with Tolbert (or Ratto with Sportsphone 680 host Ray Woodson, which leads to those cheesy “Raydio” lead-ins that lead to some pretty amusing reactions from CSN Bay Area’s Senior Insider) most of the time from 3-7 pm over the last several weeks.
Tolbert likes working with Byrnes, and I’m pretty sure Byrnes has a good time hosting with Tolbert. They’re both former athletes who played in Oakland, and they seem to really enjoy teasing each other about their respective golf games and musical tastes.
However, KNBR probably wonders what kind of value Byrnes provides. Are the ratings higher for “The Mr. T Show” when Byrnes is there? I’d say that’s doubtful, especially during the baseball off-season. Byrnes’ style (high energy, distinctive voice, occasional yelling) makes him one of the more polarizing figures on KNBR. In other words, he’s the opposite of Woodson.
Cumulus presumably let Ralph Barbieri go to save $380,000 per year; are they interested in replacing him with a guy who doesn’t want to work at what he perceives as a bargain price? On one hand, Byrnes probably doesn’t need the money as he pulled down over $28 million in salary over his Major League career and still does TV work for MLB Network. Then again, a guy with that kind of money can afford to say no to what he considers a low-ball offer.
With the permanent hosts migrating away from the station for the holidays, the Byrnes question probably won’t be answered until January at the earliest. If you were Cumulus, would you raise your offer to Byrnes or let him walk (which in Byrnes’ case would probably mean more running, cycling and/or swimming)?
Or maybe I’ll phrase it this way: who’d you rather hear with Tolbert most afternoons, Byrnes or Ratto?

Ratto is so much better... Not even close... Love Tom, but Brynes is a fool. Unlistenable
It's interesting how no one on KNBR has even mentioned Byrnes. I think Kolsky did last week when he was mentioning Byrnes' bumper music, but not a peep from anyone there regarding Byrnes. I'm sure Lee Hammer probably told all the KNBR hosts to probably not mention anything about Byrnes or his role or non-role on KNBR. It's almost like he never worked there. As I said before, I think it would be good if they just kept him on during baseball season, since baseball is his strong suit, and at times he makes sense in his analysis of the Giants and other MLB teams. I think if he co-hosted with Marty on some weekends making a cameo appearance, I guess that wouldn't be too bad, even though him and Marty would be kind of a weird pairing since Marty is more relaxed, while Byrnes is hyper, but Byrnes could maybe add a little something different to Marty's weekend Giants postgame shows. Also, him co-hosting with Woodson on Sportsphone after some Giants games wouldn't be too bad, since he did host Sportsphone before Woodson basically took over, and I think they both get along, so there wouldn't be any hard feelings there. I would also let Byrnes fill-in from time to time for Fitz and Brooks or maybe even for Gary and/or Larry during baseball season, if KNBR/Cumulus wants to keep Byrnes. I mean yes, Byrnes probably doesn't want a part-time salary, but with his MLB Network duties and his triathlons, wouldn't it make more sense for KNBR/Cumulus to pay him a part-time salary? He was there part-time. No offense to Byrnes but, did he really expect to get paid more when he was pretty much working part-time and was hardly there? I mean, yes, he co-hosted with Tom in the drive-time slot for a little while, but do you seriously get some sort of a bonus for hosting a show in the drive-time slot in the radio business? As was talked about on here earlier, Byrnes probably does have enough money in the bank with the money he got from the D-Backs and the Mariners, and they money he is probably getting from MLB Network too, as well as whatever money he's getting from KNBR/Cumulus. Byrnes should just take whatever offer KNBR/Cumulus gives him, in whatever role they put him in, whether that's filling in, co-hosting with Tom, or maybe even getting his Sportsphone gig back. But yes, Byrnes is already rich, and he's there part-time anyway. We'll see what happens with Byrnes if anything. Wouldn't it be funny if he came back to the Bay Area radio airwaves, but was on 95.7? In a way, it's kind of surprising they haven't given him a call, since they have brought in former KNBR hosts before.
Byrnes and Tolbert clashed too much...it was like listening to two young frat boys try to out-cool each other *yawn*
Wait i forgot they have Rod Ebonics Brooks and his cackle still on.
Enough of his schtick glad he gone hope for good. Something must have been up since he was not heard from during the playoffs etc. That was the worst hiring KNBR ever made.except having Dan Dibley on air. stoneman@yahoo.com
Byrnes! Ratto offers nothing but negativity and is extremely dry and boring.
Ratto or Woodson. Byrnes' voice annoys me. Plus, he's a damn st. Francis frickin Lancer.
By the way, did anyone find Matt Kolsky aka "Tolsky" kind of terrible last night on Warriors postgame? I mean yeah, he's just starting out, but maybe he should just stick to being the update guy for now. I almost kind of felt like I could've done a better job last night hosting Sportsphone. LOL. I can't believe they're going to have him host Sportsphone again tonight after tonight's Warrior game, and I think he said on Friday night too, after the Warrior game.
I will ban KNBR forever if they bring on Ratto full time. There is absolutely nothing of value on KNBR for me any more.
There are some shows of value on KNBR; the Damon Bruce Show, Gary and Larry even though it's better when just Krueger hosts it like he's doing this week. Sportsphone isn't too bad with Ray Woodson, and Marty Lurie's weekend Giants shows during baseball season are normally pretty good, even though yes, they are a little long. These are all probably the best shows on KNBR right now really.
Nope.
Ratto. He actually is thought-provoking. Byrnes sounds like way too much of a dude, which isn't good. It's channel-changing inducing.
I turn off the radio when Byrnes comes on. Enough said !
You can't be serious. Byrnes is a caricature of himself. Ratto has talent. Byrnes via Radion has zero. FP Santangelo was much better than Byrnes. Byrnes needs to shed 5-7 of his Red Bulls. Ray Woodson is finally in the right spot hosting Sportsphone 680
Neither
Can Ratto loan me one of his sweaters; I have an ugly holiday sweater contest to win at the bar down the street. That being said Ratto>Byrnes just for the fact Ratto doesn't sound like he's being electrocuted when he's on the mike like Byrnes.
Tune into the Towny and Bucher show..need to bring back Tony Bruno with Gary..
Yeah, I normally tune in to the Townsend and Bucher show. They have better chemistry than Tierney and Bucher did, and the show flows better. The Tierney and Bucher show probably wasn't going to last when Bucher kept saying that he wasn't going to try to get listeners to like Tierney, but to appreciate him. haha. It's almost like, what did that say about Tierney? LOL. That was probably like a slap in the face. But yes, the Townsend and Bucher show has been a pretty good show so far. It feels like more of a Bay Area sports show than the Tierney and Bucher show did. As far as Tony Bruno being back on with Gary, why not? That was an entertaining 30 min. of radio. I think if KNBR brought Tony Bruno back to do his segment with Gary, I think Gary, Krueger, and Tony Bruno could have a good back and forth for 30 min. It was kind of cool that Tony Bruno called in on the day of Gary's 20th anniversary show on KNBR. Who knows, maybe KNBR will bring back that segment one day. They brought back Krueger, maybe they can bring back this segment. It's probably going to be harder to bring back this segment, now that Tony Bruno is back in Philly though. But yes, they should bring back the Tony Bruno segment though.
As far as Ray Ratto goes, I don't really care for him too much, mainly for the same reasons that have been stated; he's too negative and he's a little too sarcastic for my taste at times. Yes, he actually isn't too bad with Tom and he can give good detailed analysis about the sports topics of that day, and at times he can be funny, but I think he might be too negative for people's tastes if he is going to be Tom's full-time co-host. I just don't see him doing that everyday, even though Ratto has pretty much been Tom's co-host since like last month. I remember it was after the Giants playoff and WS run. Also, Ray Ratto is getting overexposed. I mentioned this a while ago, but he is. I mean, we hear him on KNBR, we see him on CSN Bay Area, and a lot of you probably read him on CSN's website. I mean dang, what else is there for him to do? Share the wealth man! LOL.
Your right. 10 minutes of him on Comcast every other day is enough. His weak point is..no local team ever worries what Ray will say. Tim,Me,Lowell,Steve,Ann,Monte...they worry.
It is kind of weird how no one on KNBR has said anything about Byrnes. I even wondered what happened to Byrnes. Yeah, he is better talking baseball, and maybe they should just have him in a fill-in role during baseball season, or maybe co-host with Ray Woodson for the Giants Hot Stove Leagues shows right now during the MLB offseason. I agree with the sentiment that basically it's kind of ironic that Byrnes wants more money when he's still getting paid by the D-Backs and the Mariners. Money shouldn't be an issue with Byrnes, but maybe he invested a lot of that money perhaps, and maybe he felt KNBR would pay him a nice salary, especially if he was possibly going to be Ralph's replacement.
Am I the only one who actually likes Byrnes? I think he was a great host of SportsPhone680 and was also pretty entertaining with Tom when they had both of them on from April to October. Yes I may be biased cuz I was a fan of him as a player even as a Giants fan living in Arizona since he grew up a Giants fan. Anyway, I think KNBR should offer him the money to go back to hosting with Tom or hosting Sportsphone and if they can't give him the money he should try to go to 95.7 The Game and host the Pulse with Matt Steinmetz.
I'm the only other person here who a) likes Byrnes, b) hates Ratto, and c) likes Ray Woodson Cumulus is just playing lowball. They dont care who's good, they just care who will work for cheap
I agree. I like Byrnes, I don't hate Ratto as a person but I think he's very very very boring to listen to, and I like Ray Woodson too.
Ratto over Byrnes, by a long ways.
"However, KNBR probably wonders what kind of value Byrnes provides." When I tuned in to the Tolbert time slot while driving a few months back, and Mr. Caffeine (DUDE!) was with him, I immediately changed the channel. Immediately doesn't describe how quickly I change the channel, to be honest.
Ratto, but good for Byrnes. Nice to see a guy who doesn't need to play the radio media BS game of cutthroat. He has money, and a gig, and some experience in sports media. He will get a job somewhere if he wants it, but doesn't need to get bent over a hay bale in the meantime. Love KNBR, but Cumulus not so much.
They are all liars. Byrnes wants more because? he needs it? no. Because he can go elsewhere? no. Cumulus figures they only want him during baseball season...and they want to pay him part time- something I doubt Brynes cares about. So,its why pay him full time for no knowledge on other sports when can they put Woodsen or anybody else in the MLB off season. I guess Brynes might be back in favor in March or April. But one caveat..Radnich went from praising him to high heaven, then started making putdowns at his mention by Kreuger. A falling out. Like I said before,Eric might not be the total KNBR team player..ironically,his best trait.
Ratto sometimes tries to exercise his (admittedly extensive) vocabulary too much, but I'll take that any day over "dumbed-down radio". Most radio could do with a good dose of intelligent commentary over shouting, fake controversy, and sound effects and gimmicks. I've always appreciated Ratto's logic exercises painted with a good layer of cynicism, but I don't think it would work as well if he & Tolbert weren't such polar opposites that play off each other so well. That said, even if Ratto were the most frequent Tolbert co-host, I think having another host once in a while (e.g. other Ray is good too) gives a little variety, and maybe makes you appreciate Ratto a bit more. Regardless of who hosts with Tolbert, I don't think it should be Byrnes; I don't hate the guy, but too much of "The Dude Show" wears on you.
Ray Rat works well with TT. Bytnes; here's what I have thought on him: He wasn't earning his coin at night, if he was not a celebrity, they would have released him. Then the whole Ralph thing happened. - opportunity meets circumstance- get something out of Byrnes, since your contracted to him, delay any replacement of Ralph, see how it works out. Ray Rat proves to be a hit, release Byrnes, but offer him a contract he CAN refuse- then bring him in as a per idem, spot player for baseball, fill in stuff. He has less bargaining clout with KNBR than Brian Wilson has with the Giants.
Ratto Ratto Ratto Ratto Ratto Ratto. Never thought I'd plead for more Ray Ratto, but he works well with Tolbert. Byrnes is like Tolbert Jr. One Tolbert is enough. Don't need two Cali guys who used to play pro sports and have the same sense of humor. Ratto is a nice contrast to Tolbert. That's why the Barbieri/Tolbert combo worked so well. Two contrasting personalities, but when Ralph became overly bombastic, Tolbert would call him out and keep him in check. Its the same with Ratto. Ratto offers a lot of insight, he knows his stuff, and when he gets out of line and starts to become too clever for his own good, Tolbert will challenge him. And Tolbert is intelligent enough to hold his own against Ratto, and then some. Woodson and Ratto, on the other hand, not so good. Woodson is obviously an intelligent and well spoken man, but he doesn't offer strong opinions, he fades into the background, and when challenged, which is what Ratto always does, Woodson will acquiesce. Ratto needs to be challenged.
A lot of people can't get over that its ray ratto, I didn't really listen much right off the bat. Once I actually listened it was actually some pretty good radio. He really does play off Tolbert very similar to barbieri in his prime, not the Ralph that didnt give a damn for the last couple years
Ratto is a big improvement over Byrnes. Tom and Ratto are a good combo.
I'm probably the oddball that likes Eric Byrnes, but that being said, I enjoy Ray Ratto paired up with Tom Tolbert. I think he's the more sensible replacement for Barberi. with all due respect to Ray Woodson, he's quite boring on Sports Phone. He has knowledge, but not enough energy to carry the show. While Byrnes might annoy some listeners with his approach, I like his energy and he does make sense and knows what he's talking about on baseball topics. Not sure if he has an audience during the off season
Woodson over Byrnes all day
If bring him back prevents having the Raydeo on every time Tolbert is gone then I'm all for it. Otherwise a half hour a day during the baseball season would be a win.
Byrnes is simply unbearable. I'd rather listen to Christmas music all year.
They pay Byrnes? For that? Boy I thought he made off like a bandit when the Mariners paid off the rest of that contract!
Ratto. With Byrnes, I'd often switch to listen to music or something else at 3pm, but I've really been enjoying Tolbert & Ratto together.
Cumulus certainly has an affinity for playing "small ball"
Byrnes - hopefully he never comes back - too much meathead. Good riddance. Ratto is solid - good rapport with Tolbert, funny, smart. As for Byrnes - He got $30M from the Dbacks...and he's pissing and moaning about $? How about being a Dad...marathon training...KNBR...MLB network...not much time helping out at home.
Let Byrnes go. I'll take a mellower, easier to understand Ratto over amped up, Spicoli clone, Byrnes. Whenever Byrnes was on while the Game still had bellboy, I had to use TuneIn and listen to outside of market radio since I can't listen to either. I listen to Townsend some days, until Bucher gets on my nerves, but I generally listen to Tolbert when Ratto is on. When Byrnes is on, I'm back to Towny.
Byrnes should hang out with a real Spicoli to mellow out. He's way too amped up to be Spicoli-related at all. Trust me. I knew Spicoli. I was friends with Spicoli. Byrnes is no Spicoli...
Ratto > Burns It's not even close. Ray's bitter old man plays well off Tolbert's chill dude deal. Byrnes and Tolbert puts me to sleep.
neither
Ratto, by a large margin. Byrnes rarely comes up with anything thoughtful to say and his jock shtick grates on me.
