The Raiders have clearly taken a step back this season. What was a playoff hopeful 8-8 team is now a woeful 4-11 team that doesn’t have a victory over an opponent with an above .500 record. Such a drastic turnaround inevitably (and rightly) leads to questions of leadership–specifically whether or not the Raiders would be better with Hue Jackson than they are without him. There is no way to definitively answer this question. Offseason turnover and in-season injury have certainly hindered the Raiders this season. But those reasons aside, it is still very apparent that the united field by offensive coordinator Greg Knapp pales in the comparison to that of Jackson. But just how badly might surprise you.

Okay, so neither offense is great. That is to say, the discrepancies here are not drastic. But they are important. The .6 difference in yards per play would account for nearly 600 yards of offense this season, which would vault the Raiders to third in total offense.
Still, the greater the discrepancy lies in the play of Carson Palmer, who faired much better in Hue’s scheme than he has been in the West Coast offense.

These stats, unless noted otherwise, are provided by Pro Football Focus (PFF). Also note that I’ve provided three different quarterback rating. The traditional NFL model, which most agree is flawed (Read about it HERE). ESPN’s rating, which ”is a statistical measure that incorporates the contexts and details of those throws and what they mean for wins,” (Read about it HERE). And PFF’s rating, which is takes the traditional NFL formula and changes the statistical inputs (Read about it HERE).
That Carson Palmer has a higher quarterback rating this season is evidence of the flawed measures used by the NFL. Though not as accurate last season, he was still a better quarterback. He managed to complete more than 60% of his passes and do so at 8.4 yards per attempt, which would lead the NFL this season.
Not only was he a better quarterback in 2011, but he was a better quarterback against much more difficult defense.

Defense-adjusted Value Over Average (DVOA) is a stat developed by Football Outsiders (FO). According to FO, DVOA “takes every single play during the NFL season and compares each one to a league-average baseline based on situation,” and “it gives a more accurate picture of how much better (or worse) a team really is relative to the rest of the league.” To read DVOA, know that the lower the total score, the better the defense (Zero represents average). If a team’s DVOA is in the negative, that defense is good. If it’s in the positive, the defense is bad. Weighted DVOA is adjusted to give more weight to more recent games. That is, games earlier in the season do not affect a team’s DVOA as much as later games. Read more about DVOA HERE.
I’ve given you both. “Weighted Through Week Played” represents the opponent’s weighted DVOA during the week of the matchup. “Overall” is the team’s current, unweighted DVOA. I’ve also given you Overall Pass, which is the team’s current, unweighted DVOA against the pass. And, finally, I’ve given you rank so that you have a very easy means of determining the quality of an opponent both at the time of the match up and now.
No matter how you look at it, Palmer and the Raiders offense was much more formidable in 2011. So much so, in fact, that were the Raiders to have continued their 2011 trend, which it is very likely given their weaker 2012 schedule, they would be a top-5 offense. Just how this would affect their overal record is unknowable, especially given how poorly the defense has played. But it is safe to say that they probably wouldn’t be 4-11.

Some Raider fans need to reel it in...Hue was vastly overrated! Decent OC, yes...awful HC. Great trade for Aaron Curry! We have no depth and a 4th rounder would have been nice, and the guy isn't even in the NFL anymore. NFL records for penalties. And the Palmer deal...do we even need to discuss how far back this has set the franchise? Oh and then lose 4 of your last 5 games of the year, including a shutout and including the Detroit game, that Hue personally lost with his idiotic play-calling at the end of the game that gave Detroit time? He sucked. There is a reason he can't even get an interview as a HC at the pro or college level.
Mark Davis - He will be a really good owner. Reggie McKenzie - I'm not convinced he will be a great GM ... Dennis Allen - It's so easy to blame a guy who doesn't throw his headset on the ground and pout like a little girl. What about going from 170 to 109 penalties ? What about trying to coach one of the worst rosters in pro football ? Give this guy two more seasons. I think he did great his rookie year. Hue Jack City - Yes, he did some good things as Off Coordinator but he was a complete CLOWN as a head coach. The way he manipulated Al Davis on his deathbed. "Al gave me the keys to the Kingdom ... I will be taking over now " Carson Palmer - He's a good not great QB. Whatever.
Yahoo sports today said Allen is one of those who job is on the line. And they added,"Oakland made a mistake firing Hue Jackson". I'm not the only one who thinks that..and thought it from the start.
Why is it that we are so worried about the offense when it is the defense that has sucked balls for the last few years? Hell the run defense has been pathetic since the last time they made it to the Super Bowl. Al lost his touch in the draft and went about trying to make up for it by signing all these high priced free agents (DeAngelo Hall, Javon Walker etc) that didnt pan out which hurt the team because they could not resign the good players under the salary cap restrictions.
Bresnahan..sucked donkeys. Strangely, the Raiders did the same stupid hire this year with Knapp! Must be a curse..
I dont see Hue as responsible for the Raiders demise. 8-8 as OC,8-8 as HC. Neither year did he have full reign. Under Cable the first year..and then stuck will Al's man to man and Ryan and the terrible whats his name last year. When Hue had control of..the offense? it shined like it hadn't in years. His play calling was superb. Even his mistakes as rookie HC paled compared to Allens...timeouts and lost track of the score was Hue's worst thinking. Like kicking the extra point when the Raiders NEEDED two. Allen,as a never before HC has done the same...and with Carson Palmer,McFadden, and the GM backing him. Still much worse then Hue. Allen would have to go 12-4 to equal Hue's sort of two years here...OC and HC.
On the other hand, Hue traded a first and 2nd round draft pick for Carson Palmer, who made $15,000,000 and won 4 games. Those picks are critical to a lousy team, and they're gone. And Hue gave up draft picks for Aaron Curry, who was damaged goods.
Hue Jackson is responsible for our current downfall and what will come in the next few years because he traded away our future for a couch QB. Don't you think its funny how Hue immediately went to Cincy (The team that got the better of the trade) after Reggie canned him? Granted, Palmer's only the second Raider to throw for 4,000 in a single season and he did it in 15 games, but he's not a franchise QB anymore. (You guys saying that Palmer is bad simply don't watch the games) Palmer is a good QB, not great, good. There are several players who will stay based on their hustle and consistency (defense and offense) everyone else will be gone and in about 5 years (instead of 2 or 3, thanks to Hue) we'll be competitive again. The Raiders haven't come close to sniffing the playoffs in a very long time. You young kids talking about how Cable and Hue's teams were are being ridiculous and are most likely the ones clamoring for the Gruden rumors.
As head coach, Hubris proved he is a terrific OC. I would not let him within 100 miles of the GM's office or a microphone.
Dennis = Deer Allen = in headlights
I think it'll be 1-2 seasons before you can really judge. This is a huge rebuilding project, not a single season fix.
Hated Hue's bravado and idiocyncrancies (pedicures? Irish coffees? Really?). Loved his results and how he got underachievers to have good-to-great years when put into a position to make plays. The flawed roster and coordinators who might not be here next year (especially Knapp) make grading Allen difficult. That being said, he better do better next year given easier schedule and ReggieMac giving him more with better picks/cap room.
The idea that the Raiders were a potential playoff team this season is absurd. Al Davis, as brilliant a man as he was, left the organization in shambles. Poor drafts, poor trades, poor free agent signings, poor salary cap decisions, poor salary cap position. Let's face it, this is not a talented team. Reggie Mckenzie and Allen have a massive rebuilding process ahead of them. Its not going to take a season, its going to take several seasons. As painful as that may be, it has to be done. I don't know if Allen is the right man for the job, but you can't judge him on one season, even though its incredibly tempting to do so. Give it time. Let McKenzie turn the roster over and give Allen some players. I'm thinking 3 years. Then make your judgements.
I think the Raiders only have a 1st, 3rd, and 6th round pick in 2013 (BASG?) The others are gone to straight trades, or conditional picks with Seattle. With that defense, every pick needs to go to 'D', especially if Seymore is gone. Its gonna b Palmer for 2 more years, 1 for sure.
I don't feel sorry for Palmer...he's about 7 seasons past his prime. He sucks and shouldn't be QB next season. May as well start TP and look to bring in a veteran/backup like Matt Flynn (via trade), a placeholder/game manager like Alex Smith, and draft a QB in the middle rounds.
Stan nailed it. I feel kinda sorry for Palmer regardless, going from the couch, to starter on a team coming up...then to the outhouse with cracked ribs to boot. As a die hard Raider fan, I had to admit the cupboard was dry from Al's trading habits, and it might be a long year. I'd like to have faith in the pedigree of McKenzie, and give it two seasons, but watching Dennis Allen coach is painful. He makes a lot of small mistakes, and does look every bit the nerd in the headlights. I can give a pass this year, with all the house cleaning, and lack of draft picks, but next year the Raiders better sign some guys that can play, rather than 'character guys' that are average. Signings like Giordano give me some hope that there is an eye for talent. The swagger of 'Hue Jack City' was contagious, but after the Campbell injury, and the Palmer acquisition, the team came out and laid an egg against Kansas City at home, and it looked like Hue lost the team right there with his coup to get Palmer mid season. What i want to know is what happened to the blocking? They made such a big deal about the zone blocking, and it worked good last year. Now they are back to 'Carson and the Five Turnstyles'. The line is one of the biggest failures.
Not only 2011,but Cable's 2010 team was more potent on offense. This is how I see Allan.. You ever see those war movies of the civil or ww2 or 'nam?...when the battle starts the nerd military graduate who talked a good game before the shooting started, suddenly can't make a decision...the gunfire is red hot,the men are calling for him to make a decision..and he cant- he stays with zone blocking!...eventually the soldiers stop listening to him, every man for himself. That's Allen, the snot nosed West Point failure.
I don't think Dennis Allen is up to the task...
Me neither.
