Ahmad Brooks knew where to find the Rams quarterback throughout most of the game, as he came through with two of the 49ers’ five sacks in their 31-17 victory in St. Louis. Brooks may have been a little unclear on whom he pursued and sacked, based on his postgame interview.
Q: Ahmad, is there a difference from seeing Austin Davis on film and actually seeing him for the first time on the field? Vic said …
Brooks: That’s the quarterback, right?
Q: Right, yeah.
Brooks: Cause they asked me earlier. No disrespect, but I didn’t know who you were talking about.
Q: When you see him on film just for only four games this season ..
Brooks: He did a great job. Excellent. That’s an excellent job for a quarterback, especially, to go out there. And what year is it for him? Is he a rookie?
Brooks: For a second-year guy, a quarterback, to go out there and play the way he did, it’s amazing. Great on him. And he’s only going to get better.
To be fair, when Vic Fangio was asked on Thursday if he knew anything about Davis before this week, the 49ers defensive coordinator said, “I did not, personally.” Davis (who’s actually in his third year) completed 21-of-42 passes for 236 yards with a touchdown and an interception (pick-six). The 49ers and the Rams face each other again on Nov. 2 at Levi’s Stadium.
