Shawn Estes said on 95.7 FM The Game that Matt Cain will see Dr. James Andrews at some point this week about his right elbow. A source close to the Giants has confirmed to us that Cain will indeed consult with the doctor who’s been called “the sports world’s top orthopedic surgeon.”
During Saturday’s press conference announcing the Jake Peavy trade, Giants general manager Brian Sabean said Cain would need to seek a second opinion and further diagnostics.
“There may be a worst-case behind the scenes. We haven’t gotten to that point yet,” said Sabean.
Cain was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 21 (retroactive to July 11), with what is termed as “right elbow inflammation.” There are no details as to the severity of Cain’s condition or what surgical options he may discuss with Andrews, who has performed Tommy John surgery on several major league pitchers, including Brian Wilson.
