The Giants are going back to the NLCS after a 3-2 win that wouldn’t have been possible without another fantastic postseason performance from Ryan Vogelsong. Who knew the guy could go back to hitting 95 mph? His velocity dropped as the game went on, but he kept the Nationals hitless through the first four innings, got out of a jam in the fifth after allowing just one run, and went 5 2/3 innings in all, allowing just two hits and two walks and striking out four.
The last batter he faced, Jayson Werth, hit a drive to deep right field. Hunter Pence ran, leaped and with his tongue sticking out like Michael Jordan, snared the ball as he collided with the wall. The fence was no match for Pence, and Vogelsong left to a standing ovation.
While Vogelsong was talking to the media afterward, Pence patiently waited. Finally he requested Vogelsong’s presence, and took him to the middle of the clubhouse, close to where he made his famous speech after the Giants clinched a spot in these playoffs.
“Vogey!” said Pence.
“You guys ready? You know the drill. One word, three times,” Vogelsong said. “Huddy said it best. Are we a team with some big balls? YES! YES! YES!”
Afterward I asked Pence if it’s rare to see Vogelsong let loose like that.
“He does it from time to time,” said Pence. “He has his moments. He’s really quiet, and then he’ll randomly be really loud. It’s awesome.”
