The article Tony Bruno links to is written by Jason Barrett.
Sports Talk radio personality Tony Bruno who was most recently with 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia, will be filling in for 95.7 The Game in San Francisco during the week of August 4-8.
Bruno will work alongside Ric Bucher & Aubrey Huff on Monday & Tuesday and then with Bucher in a 2-man setup from Wednesday to Friday.
“With our lead host Chris Townsend having a week off for vacation, we wanted to make sure our morning show was in capable hands and having Tony step in for the week allows us to do that” said Program Director Jason Barrett.
Bruno is already familiar to Bay Area fans given his 15+ year run of contributing to KNBR. He’s currently a radio free agent seeking his next big opportunity. Fans can reach him and follow him on Twitter @TonyBrunoShow.
That’s right, KGMZ’s program director has his own blog! He seems pretty serious about it, too. Some of his posts are really thorough, like this hosting advice piece about “diving right in” to your subject matter that’s over 1,500 words long.
I wasn’t expecting to see a radio PD get into the blogging game. Hey, good for him. What’s less surprising is seeing 95.7 invite Bruno in for a one-week trial run of sorts, since 95.7 has a history of bringing in personalities who worked previously for KNBR.
As many of you probably remember, that run of 15+ years at KNBR was predominantly made up of daily guest spots on Gary Radnich’s show, otherwise known as “the best half hour in radio.” It was a free-flowing discussion full of catchphrases, R&B references … and even some sports mixed in, from time to time.
In 2011, Bruno found himself in hot water after posting a tweet calling former Giants reliever Ramon Ramirez an “illegal alien” after Ramirez plunked Shane Victorino (then a member of the Phillies, Bruno’s favorite team) in the back. His segment with Radnich had been canceled earlier that week (when Radnich was paired with Damon Bruce), and Bruno left his job at Fox Sports Radio in Los Angeles for 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia about a month later.
Bruno resigned from 97.5 The Fanatic last month … is 95.7 The Game his “next big opportunity”? Since Bruno lives in Philadelphia, bringing him out to the Bay Area just to do a week of fill-in at the beginning of August seems pretty expensive just for a one-off thing. Surely there are several hosts who work for the station occasionally who wouldn’t have minded helping out for five mornings while Townsend is away.
KGMZ’s replacement for The Rise Guys hasn’t gotten stellar reviews, so Bruno working in that time slot could mean something … not that Aubrey Huff would care all that much either way.
For all you people wanting me fired do you really think I would care? Not like I need to do this it’s just something to do. — AUBREY HUFF (@aubrey_huff) July 28, 2014
If nothing else, Bruno will be competing directly against Radnich for five days. We’ll see if that becomes a regular thing, or if Bruno heads back to Philly and finds a job somewhere else.
